Lara-Martirosyan possible for 5/21, with Jermall Charlo vs. Trout

1(Credit: Josh Jordan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jeff Aranow: An interesting fight card is being planned for May 21 on Showtime Boxing involving three big fights in the 154lb division. IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (23-0, 18 KOs) will be defending his title against #9 IBF Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs), WBA World junior middleweight Erislandy Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) will be facing #4 WBC, #7 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (36-2-1, 21 KOs) in a rematch, and #1 WBC 154lb contender Jermell Charlo (27-0, 12 KOs) will be battling #2 WBC John Jackson (20-2, 15 KOs) in a fight for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title.

The triple-header, if it takes place, will be staged in Houston, Texas. This will be a great card if it comes off. It’s a good ideal to package the three junior middleweight contests together on the same card because it helps set up fights between them in the future almost in a Super Six tournament type of situation.

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Rating the contenders – Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez

canelo5666By Al Classico: The proposed mega fight earmarked for September 2016 between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (34-0, 31) took a step backwards last week when it was announced that Canelo would opt to defend his ‘middleweight title’ against a welterweight fighter in Amir ‘King’ Khan.

While this announcement of Khan as an opponent for Canelo was a shock to the boxing world in itself, the bigger implication of this announcement is that the Canelo-GGG now looks less likely to happen anytime soon. Most fans and people in the know were expecting Canelo to defend his title in May against a lesser risk middleweight such as a Gabe Rosado in order to test the waters at the full 160 weight limit and to prepare for GGG in September.

Trout – Erislandy Lara has been calling Golovkin out for a year now

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout says that he and Erislandy Lara are both interested in fighting IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but that he’s not looking to fight either of them.

Trout believes that Golovkin has been getting matched up against fighters that are perfect for his fighting style. In other words, Golovkin has been fighting guys that stand directly in front of him so that he can get his shots off. The only fighter that had speed that he faces was Willie Monroe Jr., who didn’t have the punching power to keep him from overwhelming him, says Trout.

Austin Trout vs. Joey Hernandez on September 6th

trout33By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout (29-2, 16 KOs) will be back in action on September 6h against the struggling Joey Hernandez (24-3-1, 14 KOs) in a fight on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS. Trout, ranked #4 IBF, #4 WBO, #5 WBA, #6 WBC, is trying to work his way to a world title shot against one of the 154lb champions.

Trout is in a tough situation though because he’s already been beaten by WBA champion Erislandy Lara, and IBF champion Cornelius Bundrage, WBO champ Demetrius Andade and WBA/WBC champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. aren’t going to bother fighting him because he’s not a big money fight, and it would be a fight that could be difficult.
