Can Broner lure Mayweather out of retirement?

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Al Classico: It’s no secret in the boxing world that there is a public feud going on between the sports ‘retired’ pay-per-view king Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jnr and one of the sports top stars in Adrien ‘About Billions’ Broner. Whether this is a legitimate disagreement or a staged publicity campaign to generate interest in a potential fight between the two remains to be seen.

What is as clear as day is that ‘Money’ Mayweather is a numbers man and Adrien Broner certainly delivered those numbers in his latest fight against Ashley Theophane last Friday night. The Broner- Theophane headline fight reportedly generated an average of 1.013 Million viewers indicating that Broner’s star still shines bright when it comes to drawing big crowds, even after suffering 2 high-profile losses in recent years.

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Rating the contenders – Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez

canelo5666By Al Classico: The proposed mega fight earmarked for September 2016 between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (34-0, 31) took a step backwards last week when it was announced that Canelo would opt to defend his ‘middleweight title’ against a welterweight fighter in Amir ‘King’ Khan.

While this announcement of Khan as an opponent for Canelo was a shock to the boxing world in itself, the bigger implication of this announcement is that the Canelo-GGG now looks less likely to happen anytime soon. Most fans and people in the know were expecting Canelo to defend his title in May against a lesser risk middleweight such as a Gabe Rosado in order to test the waters at the full 160 weight limit and to prepare for GGG in September.

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Rating the contenders – Erislandy Lara

lara000(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Al Classico: Following on from my previous article on rating the potential opponents at middleweight who are capable of testing and perhaps even defeating Golovkin, we now take a look at a man who by many is seen as an undefeated fighter and also someone who has vocally expressed their interest in fighting GGG at the full 160 middleweight limit.

That man is Erislandy Lara (22-2-2, 13 KOs) who has often received the short end of the stick for a fighter of his calibre and someone who struggles to get the big names into the ring with him. He has already called out Golovkin and assuming that GGG accepts the challenge, what chance would Lara have at knocking of the middleweight king pin?

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Rating the contenders- Daniel Jacobs

Image: Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Rating the contenders- Daniel JacobsBy Al Classico: Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29KOs), aka ‘The Miracle Man’  has really cemented himself as one of the legitimate middleweight challengers to Golovkin with his emphatic 1 round stoppage of fellow top middleweight Peter Quillin in December 2015. It’s hard to gauge whether that KO was the result of Jacob’s skill level or due to a lapse of concentration and a slow start from Peter Quillin but it was likely a culmination of both.

Perhaps we need to see a rematch between the two to get a more accurate picture on how good both Jacobs and Quillin are in respect to each other. If Jacobs opts not to give Quillin an immediate rematch, but instead decides to take on the biggest challenge of his career and face Golovkin, then how is he likely to fare against the so called ‘Middleweight Monster’?

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Ranking the contenders – Billy Joe Saunders

Image: Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Ranking the contenders - Billy Joe SaundersBy Al Classico: Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KO’s), The undefeated WBO champion threw a real spanner into the works when he defeated Andy Lee in late 2015 and derailed a potential, higher profile  Lee- Golovkin showdown this year. With the defeat of Lee and the acquisition of a ‘world champion’ belt, his name was immediately thrust into the conversation as a next up Golovkin opponent.

According to some reports, there was an offer tabled to Saunders for a fight against Golovkin in April, however the negotiations collapsed, with money allegedly being the biggest barrier to the deal being struck. Saunders has since opted to go in a different direction at this stage of his career but hopefully this fight can be made at some point in the not-too-distant future as it will be a really intriguing match-up. So if the fight does eventually get made, how would Saunders fare if he were to step up and step into the ring with Golovkin?

Thoughts on Canelo v GGG in 2016

golovkin5554(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Al Classico: A few weeks into 2016 and the talk is heating up about a potential clash between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez taking place sometime towards the end of the year, most likely around September or so. Hopefully the public demand for this fight will ensure that it happens sooner rather than later and we get to see this mega fight within the year, rather than within the next 5 years as was the case with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Manny Pacquiao showdown.

With Canelo being the paper champion at middleweight but having never fought at the full 160 weight limit, the time has come for him  to start answering some real questions; whether he is the real deal or simply a pretender to the throne. He does have legitimate talent with some fantastic skills and has shown a willingness to fight anyone, however, this has recently been overshadowed by the abuse of his star power in ensuring that circumstances and decisions always go his way.

Golovkin masterclass schools Lemieux!

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Al Classico: Yesterday we witnessed the highly anticipated battle for middleweight supremacy between Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (34-0, 31KO’s) and David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KO’s). The result went exactly as expected with Golovkin completely dominating Lemieux with his jab and control of range. Even though Lemiuex was a heavy underdog in this fight, the nature of the sport always gives the underdog the chance to be one punch away from scoring a KO win. Unfortunately for Lemieux, his chance never came.

This fight was billed as a middleweight war, but it was anything but that; instead it was a middleweight masterclass from GGG. Both men have a fearsome reputation for being knockout artists and their records certainly reflect this, however one of them has built his record on the base of strong fundamental boxing skills, the other predominantly on his raw punching ability and aggression. It is easy to see which one is which.
