Glen Johnson replaces Kessler in Super Six, will now face Allan Green

Image: Glen Johnson replaces Kessler in Super Six, will now face Allan GreenBy Jim Dower: 41-year-old light heavyweight Glen Johnson (50-14-2, 34 KO’s) will be the replacement for Mikkel Kessler in the Super Six tournament, according to boxing news from AP. Although Johnson isn’t in the light heavyweight division, there really wasn’t too many available fighters to replace Kessler on this short notice. Johnson will now be facing Allan Green next in what will likely be the only fight for Johnson in the Super six tournament. For him to make it into the semi finals, he will have to knockout Green and then get help from the other Super Six fighters. Johnson has lost two out of his last three fights, however.

41-year-old Glen Johnson could be Allan Green’s next opponent

By Jason Kim: I figured Allan Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) wouldn’t likely be getting much for his replacement opponent in the Super Six tournament after Mikkel Kessler bowed out of the tourney with an eye problem. However, I at least expected that Green would be facing someone from his own weight class, since the tournament is being pooled from fighters from the super middleweight division.

Image: Possible opponents for Allan Green: Andy Lee, Sartison, and StieglitzBy William Mackay: It looks like Allan Green is going to be staying in the Super Six tournament after all, as the news has been announced that the group stage 3 part of the tournament will be going ahead in November instead of going straight into the semifinals. After Mikkel Kessler dropped out of the tournament suddenly, it left Green in limbo, without an opponent and it was thought that Green would be dismissed.

Allan Green – Still no decision on what happens to him in the Super Six tourney

Image: Allan Green - Still no decision on what happens to him in the Super Six tourneyBy Scott Gilfoid: Earlier today, it was announced that the other Super Six tournament fighters – Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell, Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham – all would be fighting their semifinal bouts on November 27th. However, Super Six tournament fighter Allan Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) still doesn’t have a date or an opponent for his next fight. In press release, it was said that a decision will be made on Green in the near future. It’s expected that Green will be out of the tournament because his previously scheduled opponent Mikkel Kessler dropped out of the Super Six tournament recently due to an eye problem.

Allan Green still wants to fight in the Super Six tournament

Image: Allan Green still wants to fight in the Super Six tournamentBy Eric Thomas: Despite suffering a humiliating one-sided 12 round unanimous decision loss to Andre Ward in June and then seeing his next opponent Mikkel Kessler drop out of the Super Six tournament because of an eye injury, the 30-year-old Green still wants to stay in the tourney and fight on. That’s not likely going to happen, as the word is that there won’t be a replacement for Kessler and that Green will be dropped from the tourney for lack of an opponent. Green is supposed to be given a fight on Showtime outside of the tournament instead. In an article at Boxingtalk.com, Green says “I still want to fight for that belt [the WBC super middleweight title]. I just want what Andre Dirrell and Mikkel Kessler had; the chance to redeem myself in this tournament and advance to the semi-finals.”

The Super Six tourney didn’t really lose much in Kessler and Green’s departure

Image: The Super Six tourney didn't really lose much in Kessler and Green's departureBy Scott Gilfoid: There’s been a lot of people bellyaching about the loss of WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler and Allan Green from the Super Six tournament this week, but I don’t see it as being a big deal. Let’s be real here. Kessler and Green had very little chance of winning the Super Six tournament. I do think Kessler had a good chance of making it into the semifinals if he didn’t break apart under the big power and speed of Green. However, once Kessler got there, chances are high that he’d meet up with either Andre Dirrell or Andre Ward and then get beaten black and blue. That would have almost certainly been the end of the line for Kessler, so it really doesn’t matter much that he’s pulled out of the tournament.

With Kessler now gone from the Super Six tournament, Allan Green is likely too

Image: With Kessler now gone from the Super Six tournament, Allan Green is likely tooBy Jim Dower: With WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler pulling out of the Super Six tournament today due to a serious eye injury, his opponent previously planned opponent for September 25th Allan Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) is looking like he’s gone as well from the tournament. The 30-year-old Green’s promoter Lou Dibella had this to say about Green’s future in a press release sent out today to boxing sites: “In the coming days we will sit down with Ken Hershman [ the senior vice president of Showtime] to discuss Allan’s future. We trust that Showtime will provide Allan with the opportunity to showcase his skills in a meaningful fight versus a world class opponent in the very near future.”

Kessler can’t afford to get careless with Green

By Scott Gilfoid: World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO’s) has already been beaten once in the Super Six tournament by American Andre Ward last year in November. Kessler rebounded from the defeat to win a close 12 round unanimous decision over Carl Froch of Britain in April 2010. Now, the 31-year-old Kessler will be facing another American in Allan Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) on September 25th at the MCH Multiarena, Herning, Denmark. Kessler is expected to win this fight mainly because of how poor Green looked in his last fight against Ward. Green lost the fight by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in June by the scores of 120-108, 120-108 and 120-108.
