Kessler can’t afford to get careless with Green

By Scott Gilfoid: World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO’s) has already been beaten once in the Super Six tournament by American Andre Ward last year in November. Kessler rebounded from the defeat to win a close 12 round unanimous decision over Carl Froch of Britain in April 2010. Now, the 31-year-old Kessler will be facing another American in Allan Green (29-2, 20 KO’s) on September 25th at the MCH Multiarena, Herning, Denmark. Kessler is expected to win this fight mainly because of how poor Green looked in his last fight against Ward. Green lost the fight by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in June by the scores of 120-108, 120-108 and 120-108.

In other words, Green lost all 12 rounds against Ward in that bout and wasn’t a factor a in the fight. However, Kessler was also dominated by Ward, and although Kessler was given some rounds by the judges, I personally couldn’t identify one round in which I saw Kessler winning. What we really have here is two fighters that have been totally dominated by Ward and made to look bad because of his superior boxing skills. Kessler may have looked better in losing to Ward, but the fact remains that Kessler was totally dominated by Ward. Kessler fans like to point out that he was cut by a series of head butts, and they feel that’s why he was beaten by Ward.

No, the head butts had nothing to do with how badly Kessler was beaten in that fight. Kessler was having problems with Ward long before the cuts and the head butts became a problem. Kessler just didn’t have the physical skills to deal with Ward. And the same goes for Green. However, with pretty much everyone giving Green little chance of beating Kessler, he has a real opportunity to shock his Danish opponent by coming out and showing his superior hand speed and power and making a believer out of Kessler.

Green is probably the fastest opponent that Kessler will have fought at this point in terms of hand speed, and Green’s power is right there with Froch’s and maybe a tad better. Kessler is going to be getting hit by shots that will be coming in faster and with arguably more power than anything he’s been hit with in the past. It doesn’t matter than Kessler will have an arena full of screaming Danish fans supporting him on September 25th, because they won’t be the ones that will be taking Green’s blistering fast and powerful shots; Kessler will.

He’ll be out there all by his lonesome having to deal with an angry Green who will be seeking vengeance for his last defeat in the Super Six tournament. Kessler looked like a lost boy when Ward started off quickly against him. I expect Green to jump out fast, take the charge of the fight early, and make Kessler lose his will to fight. You can see how Kessler doubted himself in the Ward fight, and you also could see the same self doubt in his fight with Froch. The difference in the Froch fight was that Carl didn’t come after Kessler and let Kessler regain his confidence. If you’ve got someone afraid of you, you have to stay on them and show them you’re the master. Froch didn’t do that, but Green will.
