This is why it seems all the more strange that he came in at 171.7lbs during Friday’s weigh-in for his bout against Mikkel Kessler on Saturday in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Just as when he struggling to make 168, Green looked weight drained during today’s weigh-in and you have to wonder why he didn’t come in closer to the 175 pound limit. It does give Green a ready made excuse if he gets beaten up by Kessler tomorrow night. Green can come back with the excuse that he took too much weight off, and that effected his performance. But if he’s not going to come into his fights closer to the required weight, then he may need to move up to cruiserweight so that he can make the weight without draining himself.

For his part, Kessler weighed in at 169.1 lbs. However, Kessler has never had any problems making weight in the past when he was fighting at 168, so it’s not as if he’s losing anything by not coming closer to the 175 pound limit like Green is. If anything, Kessler is better off fighting at around 170 lbs because the more he weighs the slower he’ll likely be. Kessler’s speed is very important for him because he can’t afford to be slow at light heavyweight because he’ll be facing bigger guys with big power when he eventually starts facing quality opposition in the future.

The WBC Silver light heavyweight strap will be on the line for the fight. It’s just another made up strap that means little other than something to impress the television networks and casual fans who don’t have a clue that it’s a meaningless trinket.
