Image: David Price and Sam Sexton could fight for vacant British heavyweight titleBy Scott Gilfoid: The British Boxing Board of Control is expected to nominate Sam Sexton (15-2, 6 KO’s) to fight David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) for the vacant British heavyweight title next. This comes after British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KOs) vacated both his titles on Wednesday.

!–adsense–>Price will now be forced to fight the 27-year-old Sexton for the British strap. However, it hardly seems worth it. Who cares about some worthless domestic level strap? Price, 28, needs to start getting concerned with his age because he’s about to turn 29, and that’s a ripe age for someone still wasting time on domestic straps. Price is on the Audley Harrison path to a world title. In other words, Price is going to pitter pat around for three or four years facing Sam Sexton types over and over again at the domestic level and pretty soon, he’ll be 34 and wondering where the years went. By then, American one-punch knockout artist Deontay Wilder will already be up there among the top fighters and there won’t be a place for Price.

This is why he needs to forget about Sexton and go for the top fighters right away. For crying out loud, Price is an ex-Olympian. What is he doing fighting Sexton? I mean, Price is so far behind the pace of the Klitschko brothers that it’s not even funny. They had accomplished much more than him at a similar age. I’m not sure if this is a British thing for the fighters to have their hands held for so long or if it’s a promoter deal, but it’s a waste of time.

If Price was smart, he’d tell the British Boxing Board that they can keep their strap. Price needs to look at his advancing age and start looking to fight younger talented guys instead of the awful opposition he’s been fighting his entire career. Hes fighting his career like he’s 21 instead of 28 about to turn 29.
