Martirosyan vs. Green on Cotto-Foreman undercard: Does this card lack punch?

By Chris Williams: In looking at the undercard of the June 5th bout between WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman vs. challenger Miguel Cotto, I can’t see much there that’s appealing besides the main event. The one notable fight on the undercard is unbeaten light middleweight contenders Vanes Martirosyan (27-0, 17 KO’s) vs. Joe Greene (22-0, 14 KO’s) for the NABF light middleweight title. That’s a decent fight, but not all that interesting. I wasn’t at all impressed with Martirosyan’s controversial 10 round unanimous decision win over Kassim Ouma in January 2010. I thought Ouma had done more than enough to win the fight.

Martirosyan, who is trained by Freddie Roach and fights for Top Rank, is currently ranked #3 WBO, #6 WBC, #8 IBF and #8 WBA. His handlers think he can become a future world champion. He might, because the junior middleweight division is weak and there is, after all, four titles for him to go after and not just one. However, I frankly don’t see Martirosyan as a top 10 fighter at junior middleweight and thinks there’s a lot of better fighters at that weight class than him.

While I like the match-up between him and Greene, I don’t like it as the co-main event. I think the card needed a bigger name than Martirosyan to get interest in this card. Even the main event between Foreman and Cotto is lacking. Martirosyan is a decent fighter, but I don’t see him as potential future champion at junior welterweight and even if he does eventually win a title, I can’t see him holding onto it for long. Greene decent but doesn’t have any power. I don’t this is a fight that will add much to the card.

I’d like to see this fight happen, but I see this as a bottom of the card type of fight and not something supporting the main event. And like I said, the main event isn’t all that interesting either. The only suspense for me is whether Cotto will get cut up and taken out again. I think Foreman might do a number on Cotto and could cut him to ribbons with his punches and his head. This is an okay fight, but I don’t see it having the kind of magnitude to want to place it in the huge Yankee Stadium.

The other fights on this card are Pawel Wolak vs. James Moore, Christian Martinez vs. TBA. I’ve seen Wolak and Moore fight, and seen both of them get beaten. I don’t know that I want to see them fight at Yankee Stadium. I would have preferred that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had put some more exciting names on the card than this.
