Martirosyan vs. Greene on Saturday night

By Jim Dower: Unbeaten junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (27-0, 17 KO’s) has a tough bout ahead of him on Saturday night against undefeated Joe Greene (22-0, 14 KO’s) on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Yuri Foreman bout at Yankee Stadium, in New York. This is one of those rare fights in which two young and promising fighters are matched against each other early in their careers.

Cotto-Foreman and Martirosyan-Greene this Saturday

Image: Cotto-Foreman and Martirosyan-Greene this SaturdayBy Jason Kim: This Saturday night at the Yankee Stadium in New York, WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KO’s) will defend his World Boxing Association title against former WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s). Foreman, 29, will have the size advantage over Cotto, and the better footwork. Cotto has looked less than impressive since his fight with Shane Mosley in 2007, and has problems in that fight, his fights against Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey and Manny Pacquiao.

Martirosyan vs. Green on Cotto-Foreman undercard: Does this card lack punch?

By Chris Williams: In looking at the undercard of the June 5th bout between WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman vs. challenger Miguel Cotto, I can’t see much there that’s appealing besides the main event. The one notable fight on the undercard is unbeaten light middleweight contenders Vanes Martirosyan (27-0, 17 KO’s) vs. Joe Greene (22-0, 14 KO’s) for the NABF light middleweight title. That’s a decent fight, but not all that interesting. I wasn’t at all impressed with Martirosyan’s controversial 10 round unanimous decision win over Kassim Ouma in January 2010. I thought Ouma had done more than enough to win the fight.

Santos vs. Martinez on February 14th – Did Greene Luck Out By Getting Kidney Stones?

martinez464431By Jim Dower: With Joe Greene (20-0, 14 KOs) suddenly developing a case of kidney stones and unable to meet interim WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (44-1-1, 24 KOs) on February 14th, it paves the way for WBA light middleweight champion Daniel Santos (32-3-1, 23 KOs) to step in and fight Martinez instead. As it turns out, it may be a stroke of luck for the highly ranked 22-year-old Greene, who might have taken a severe beating if he had continued on and fought Martinez. Greene, ranked #5 in the World Boxing Organization and #15 in the WBC, has fought mostly limited competition in his four-year pro career.

Greene Defeats Torres, Looks Terrible

greene4446.jpgBy Eric Thomas: Making his first appearance as a light middleweight, undefeated contender Joe Greene (20-0, 14 KOs) struggled badly with the hard-punching Jose Miguel Torres (20-4, 18 KOs), defeating him by a harder than expected 12-round unanimous decision to win the vacant NABA light middleweight title on Wednesday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida. The final judges’ scores were 118-107, 118-107 and 119-106. The lopsided scores, however, didn’t give a true indication of how badly Greene looked in the fight, for he fought poorly, pawing with his jab, showing little power, a poor work rate and getting hit with some really big shots from Torres, brother of former WBO light welterweight champion Ricardo Torres.

Green knocked Torres down with a left hand in the 5th round, but it was a case of Torres being off balance rather than him actually being hurt. That didn’t stop Greene, though, from futilely attempting to score a knockout immediately after the knockdown, but it was a hopeless case as it merely gave Torres, a fighter with crude boxing skills but big power like his brother, a chance to land his huge punches.

Greene Stops Okine

green46322.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated junior middleweight prospect Joe Greene (19-0, 14 KOs) had a harder than expected fight on Wednesday night, stopping last minute replacement Joshua Okine (18-4-1, 12 KOs) in the 9th round of a scheduled 10-round bout at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida. Greene, the 2004 National Golden Gloves Middleweight champion, struggled early on with his accuracy, ultimately costing him a point in the 2nd round after the referee penalized him after his 2nd low blow in the round. This had the effect of changing Green’s offensive fighting strategy, which usually includes a lot of body punches, causing him to throw next to zero body shots in the remainder of the fight.

Greene also took a lot more shots in the fight than he normally does, as he seemed unable to prevent the southpaw Okine from landing an occasional powerful left hand. In the later rounds of the fight, Greene, 22, seemed distracted, often looking out into the audience as he fought. As a consequence, Greene was hit on a number of occasions with shots that he probably wouldn’t have if he had stayed focused exclusively on his opponent in from of him.

Greene Stops Mora

green35222.jpgBy David Larh: In an impressive performance, unbeaten middleweight contender Joe Greene (18-0, 13 KOs) stopped Francisco Antonio Mora (52-13, 35 KOs) in the 10th round on Saturday night on the undercard of Wladimir Klitschko vs. Sultan Ibragimov heavyweight unification title bout at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Mora, 34, was knocked down four times in the bout, and at the end of the 10th round he collapsed to the canvas after bumping heads with Greene. At that point, the fight was stopped moments later due to Mora having sustained a vicious beating over the course of the fight. Earlier, the ringside doctor had been looking to stop the fight due to an ear problem for Mora, in addition to the fact that he was taking a pounding in a one-sided fight from the 22 year-old Greene.

The southpaw Greene, 2004 National Golden Gloves Middleweight Champion, looked incredible throughout the fight, hitting Mora at will with jabs, straight left hands and mixture of hooks to the body and head. In contrast to unbeaten middleweight John Duddy, who struggled on the undercard against Walid Smichet, Greene looked noticeably better than Duddy.
