Rios: Broner thinks he’s the next Mayweather

broner6664By Allan Fox: Former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios isn’t impressed with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s), and he sees him as a want to be Floyd Mayweather Jr. clone, but without the skills that made Mayweather a great fighter. Rios feels he would have no problems beating Broner if they were to fight at some point in the future.

Speaking with fighthubtv.com, Rios said “He [Broner] thinks he’s the next Mayweather…he said I would never touch him. If that little 5’4” midget [Gavin Rees] guy landed all those shots…imagine letting me hit you…he blocks well, but not well enough to call him the next Mayweather. He’s not that type of fighter. He does get hit.”

Broner, 23, is definitely a lot different than Mayweather. He doesn’t have the hand speed that Mayweather had at 23, and he doesn’t move around the ring like Mayweather. Broner fights flat-footed because he’s top heavy and doesn’t have the body to move around the ring like Mayweather.

If need be, Broner could move around the ring for a little while, but he would tire out if he had to do this more than two rounds. That’s one of the problems that Broner has in his game. If he one day has to fight a big puncher at lightweight or light welterweight, he would be forced to stand in there with him at close range because he’s incapable of moving for any length of time.

The same applies for Rios. He’s a stationary fighter that comes forward. If one day Rios finds himself in with a huge puncher that he doesn’t have the chin to take his shots, he’s going to lose to that fighter due to his lack of mobility.

Broner is definitely not Mayweather, but he does some things really well like Mayweather such as blocking punches, throwing short pinpoint shots, and fighting well in close. Broner is also patient like Mayweather, and that helps him conserve energy and no go to pieces when he’s being pressured.

Rios thinks that Broner deserved to lose to Daniel Ponce De Leon in their fight in 2010. It was a close fight but Rios had De Leon winning.
