Adrien Broner fights welterweight contender Blair Cobbs in the headliner on June 7th at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

This is the fight that the former four-division world champion Broner (35-4-1, 24 KOs) facing next after his win over Bill Hutchinson in June of last year.

Undercard on June 7th

Noel Mikaelian vs. Ryan Rozicki
Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter

Where Does Broner Go From Here?

Broner is considered washed up in the eyes of many fans, and not the fighter that he once was from 2010 to 2013. He doesn’t throw enough punches, and he’s ill-suited to fight at welterweight due to his power not being enough to compete with top fighters in this weight class.

It’s hard to say where a victory for Adrien over Cobbs takes him. Broner could make money if he can get a fight against British welterweight Conor Benn or possibly IBF 147-lb champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis if the Saudis are involved. However, Broner might need a better win, Giovani Santillan or Josh Taylor, to put him in position to fight for a world title at welterweight.

There wouldn’t be much interest from fans in seeing Broner get a crack at a world title after beating Cobbs becaue it won’t be a significant enough win. Boots Ennis vs. Broner would be a train wreck on PPV if the organizers choose to charge fans to see the match, and they likely would.

Broner’s Peak and Decline

When Broner was at his best, he competed at 126 and 130, and too strong for the fighters in that weight class. Unfortunately, Broner hurt his career in 2013 by moving up to 147, chasing paydays, and it’s been a slow downhill slide ever since.

It’s safe to say that the money that Broner now makes is nowhere near what he was getting 10+ years ago when he was competing at super featherweight.

Blair Cobbs: A Modest Test

Cobbs (16-1-1, 10 KOs) is technically a step up from Broner’s last opponent, but not much of one. The 34-year-old Cobbs isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies at 147, which says a lot.

The way that Cobbs was blown out of the water in nine rounds by Alexis Rocha in 2022 might be the reason why he’s not ranked. Cobbs looked entirely overmatched against Rocha and was battered the entire fight until it was halted in round nine.
