Maidana wants the Mayweather-Guerrero winner

maidana454By Allan Fox: Former WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) is hoping he can face the winner of the May 4th fight between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. Maidana sees Mayweather as the better fighter of the two, and he’d like to face him if possible.

Maidana was supposed to have fought Guerrero last year but Guerrero suffered a shoulder injury that wiped out the fight. Maidana saw Guerrerio’s recent win over Andre Berto, and he wasn’t impressed with Guerrero’s performance, as he felt that Guerrero fought a dirty fight against Berto.

Maidana, #2 WBA, could very well face Mayweather in the near future because he’s reportedly on his approved list of opponents for his six-fight deal with Showtime/CBS. Mayweather has 30 months to complete those six fights, so he’s going to be looking to get back in the ring not long after his fight with Guerrero, win or lose. The contract is good no matter what happens in Mayweather’s six fights, so we could see Maidana picked by Mayweather soon.

However, Maidana is going to need to get past his next opponent Josesito Lopez on April 20th. The fight hasn’t been finalized yet, but they’ve agreed on it. That’s going to be a tough fight for Maidana because Lopez likes to throw a lot of punches and he makes it really tough on his opponents.

The one fighter that was able to handle Lopez easily was WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but it was easier for him because he’s a bigger fighter with more power. Maidana is basically a light welterweight in terms of frame size, and he only recently moved up to welterweight. He’s not shown the same kind of power that he had when he was fighting at 140.

It would be interesting to see how Maidana would do against Mayweather. That would be a nice fight. We already kind of know how Maidana would do against Guerrero because we saw Selcuk Aydin give Guerrero all kinds of problems with his pressure and his power last year.
