Denis Boytsov vs. Marcelo Luiz Nascimento on February 17th in Germany

boytsov3By Allan Fox: Undefeated heavyweight contender Denis Boytsov (31-0, 25 KO’s) will be back in the ring on February 17th against the hard hitting Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (16-4, 14 KO’s) in a scheduled 8 round bout at the Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommem, Germany.

Boytsov, 26, is looking to stay busy and keep moving up the rankings so that he can get a title shot against one of the champions. Ranking #4 WBA, #5 WBO, Boytsov is in range of a title shot if he can keep winning. However, he’s got to be a little busier because he’s not been nearly as active as he should in the past two years.

A big part of Boytsov’s problems is he’s been dealing with injuries, and that’s kept him out of fights. Recently, Boytsov had a chance to fight Tyson Fury, but the fight didn’t happen unfortunately.

That would have been a big opportunity for Boytsov to show whether he has the talent to become a world champion. If he can’t beat Fury, then it’s probably unrealistic that Boytsov will ever be a world champion because there are a number of heavyweights that are on the same level as Fury.

Boytsov last fought last year in April in beating journeyman Dominick Guinn by a 10 round unanimous decision. Boytsov dominated the fight but was unable to stop Guinn. In Boytsov’s two fights before that, he beat Darnell Wilson and Matthew Greer.

At 6’1”, Boytsov is one of the shorter heavyweight contenders in the division. He’s going to have to work on his power if he wants to beat the big 6’5” and above heavyweight since he’s not punching hard enough right now to be able to stop the better heavyweights.

The 32-year-old Nascimento has lost four out of his last seven fights in the past two years. He was beaten by Tyson Fury by a 5th round knockout in February 2011, and has since lost to Manuel Charr, Jolvo Pudar and Tor Hamer.
