Hatton: Mayweather & Pacquiao should fight and split purse 50-50

hatton5555By Chris Williams: Britain’s Ricky Hatton thinks Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. should hurry and fight while they still have time left with their careers. Hatton feels that it’s getting late for both of them in terms of their career, but they should still fight and split the purse 50-50.

Hatton said to espn.co.uk “Since Pacquiao got beat it’s lost its sparkle. It’s a shame that they don’t want to fight each other…I think they should go 50-50 and just get it on.”

That would have been a good idea three years ago in 2010, but Pacquiao couldn’t agree to the random blood testing that Mayweather wanted for the fight that would have taken place on March 13th, 2010. If you remember, Mayweather agreed on a 50-50 purse split, he agreed on a weight penalty and he agreed with the ring and glove size.

The only thing that stopped the fight from moving ahead was that Mayweather wanted the random blood testing to be halted at 14 weeks before the fight, whereas Pacquiao wanted it stopped within 24 days.

With Pacquiao losing his last two fights to Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez, it makes no sense now for Mayweather to agree to a 50-50 deal with Pacquiao. Mayweather is unbeaten; Pacquiao has lost his last two fights, and will likely lose his next fight in September against Marquez.

How do you even begin to ask Mayweather to entertain the idea of giving Pacquiao a 50-50 deal once he loses to Marquez again? That doesn’t make sense because it would be a bad deal on Mayweather’s part. You don’t give a guy a 50-50 deal if he’s no longer winning fights. That would be like rewarding someone for failure, and that’s just not going to happen.

Even if Pacquiao does beat Marquez in September, you still can’t ask Mayweather for a 50-50 deal because Pacquiao will still have lost 2 out of his last 3 fights.
