Image: Boytsov pulls out of Fury fight: Tyson gets a lucky break?By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBC heavyweight contender Denis Boytsov (31-0, 25 KO’s) pulling out of his scheduled December 1st fight with Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) may have handed Fury a huge gift in a couple of ways. First off, Fury can now avoid what would have likely been a knockout loss against the tough Russian fighter with excellent boxing skills and superb power. Fury wasn’t going to win that fight, let’s face it.

Boytsov was the much more skilled fighter of the two and would have done a number on the slapping Fury. But something Fury also gets from Boytsov pulling out of the fight is that it’s going to give more than a few boxing fans the feeling that Boytsov chose not to take the fight because he’s afraid of fighting the 6’9″ Fury. That’s obviously not the case, but a lot of fans will believe that illusion anyway.

The real truth was that Boytsov wasn’t in the best of shape when the fight was first talked about and he soon realized that he couldn’t whip himself into shape by the early December 1st fight date. You have to remember that Boytsov hasn’t fought since April of this year, and that’s 7 months and it was asking too much for him to get in good enough shape in only one month to fight Fury. I think even an out of shape Boytsov could beat Fury, but Boytsov’s too much of a professional to let himself be rushed into a fight that he’s not physically ready to take. Boytsov needs at least two to three good months to get in shape like normal fighters do when they’re fighting.

This works out real well for Fury because he avoids getting exposed and now can start flapping his gums about how Boytsov pulled out of the fight. Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy now has an excuse for when Fury likely fights a weak opponent on December 1st. Hennessy can use the excuse that there wasn’t enough time to find a good heavyweight opponent for Fury to fight. We’ll then likely see someone along the same lines as the types of guys that Fury has been fighting his entire career. In other words, a likely soft touch.
