Image: Price vs. Skelton on FridayBy Scott Gilfoid: This Friday night British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion (14-0, 12 KO’s) has a sick mismatch against 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom.

This is a fight that the 29-year-old Price’s promoter set him up with, and I’m still trying to figure out the logic in it because I can’t see any other than having Price taking part in a stay busy fight against an older opponent with a recognizable name for the British boxing fans.

It’s not a fight where Price is going to get anything out of because Skelton is really old now and hasn’t faced a world class fighter for the past two since being stopped in the 4th round by Kubrat Pulev. Now Skelton is two years older, and I don’t see that as a positive for him. He’s 45, and what is he going to do to give Price any problems? Skelton doesn’t have much in the way of power, and he’s not particularly fast either with his hands.

Price, 6’8″, has about every advantage you can think of having in this fight. He’s faster, taller, longer reach, and a lot stronger. Price is going to have to take it easy on Skelton if he wants this fight to go beyond the first round because Skelton isn’t going to be able to stand up to Price’s shots for long without folding up.

Skelton has faced Kevin McBride, Ali Adams, Tom Dallas, Ladislav Kovarik and Jakov Gospic in his last five fights. Skelton has won all five fights, but that’s not saying anything because all of those guys are incredibly beatable, so it’s not surprising that Skelton beat them.

Skelton is going to need to really bring it on Friday night if he wants to win this fight because if Price is able to dictate the pace of the fight he generally gets early knockouts. The only way to give Price any problems is if he’s pressured and hit hard. This is what Skelton needs to do in order to get the win.
