Image: Garcia ready to finish off Morales and send him into retirementBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (24-0, 15 KO’s) is poised to beat 36-year-old Erik Morales (52-8, 36 KO’s) to send him into a permanent retirement when they meet up on October 20th at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York. Morales is getting a second chance at Garcia despite having previously been badly beaten by him last March in a one-sided 12 round beat down.

The fight was so one-sided that it’s been impossible to generate any real excitement about this fight with the boxing public. It’s like trying to generate excitement for a second fight between George Foreman and Joe Frazier after the first fight was a massacre. Garcia, 24, didn’t quite beat Morales that bad, but he beat him about as bad as you can in dealing with a 12 round decision.

Morales didn’t stand a chance as he wasn’t able to deal Garcia’s hand speed, power, youth and boxing ability. Morales was knocked down in the 11th round and was lucky that he wasn’t put down additional times because Garcia could have had he wanted to.

It looked like Garcia fought in 1st gear for most of the fight. The only instance that I can see where Garcia briefly shifted into second was when Morales hit him with a hard right hand in the 11th. Garcia immediately knocked down, as if to say, ‘No, Morales, get back in your place.’ It was just hopelessly one-sided.

To show you how much of a crushing blow the loss was for Morales, he hasn’t even fought since then. Before that, Morales was fighting pretty much every four months since making his comeback. But by the time Morales steps inside the ring to fight Garcia on October 20th, it’ll have been seven months since he last fought.

Garcia plans on putting the final nail in Morales’ career by knocking him out in this fight. He wants to do this because he doesn’t want Morales to be able to come back and say that the judges robbed him or whatever. The only way to do this is to make sure that he knocks Morales out to where there’s no guesswork involved in the outcome.
