Image: Saul Alvarez needs opponent for DecemberBy Dan Ambrose: If WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be fighting in December then his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are going to have to find someone awfully quick unless they’re just going to pool from the light welterweight division again to find another smaller, weaker fighter than Alvarez to give him an easy mark. Alvarez isn’t going to get his top two picks Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto.

Mayweather Jr. doesn’t appear interested in fighting for the remainder of the year, and Cotto is already fighting on December 1st against Austin Trout. So provided that Golden Boy doesn’t go searching for Alvarez’s next opponent from the light welterweight or welterweight divisions here’s what Golden Boy will be picking from for December for Alvarez:

Carlos Molina
James Kirkland
Demetrius Andrade
Jonathan Gonzalez
Sergiy Dzinziruk
Carlos Quintana
Ricardo Mayorga
Willie Nelson
Gabriel Rosado
Jack Gulcay

If Golden Boy decides to find a smaller guy from the welterweight division then here will be the choices:

Marcos Maidana
Selcuk Aydin
Jan Zaveck

Here’s the choices at light welterweight if Golden Boy picks another 140 pounder to fight Alvarez. Note: Alvarez’s last opponent Josesito Lopez was essentially picked from the light welterweight division.

Lucas Matthysse
Ajose Olusegun
DeMarcus Corley
Joan Guzman
Humberto Soto
Kenall Holt

There’s really not a lot of options for Alvarez in any one division. You would hope that Golden Boy will at least match Alvarez up with someone from his own division but given Alvarez’s past fights against smaller guys like Jose Miguel Cotto, Matthew Hatton and now Josesito Lopez, it’s likely that Golden Boy will continue to match Alvarez against smaller guys in order to pad his record and keep him winning his fights until Mayweather Jr. or Cotto are freed up so that they can fight Alvarez.
