Morales is going to have to fight on a much higher level than he did the last time he fought Garcia last March.

Morales looked completely out of his class in losing by a 12 round decision, and the only reason he’s getting a rematch with Garcia now is because Morales had a rematch clause in the contract with Garcia. If not for that there’s no way that Garcia would have wasted time in fighting Morales a second time because there just isn’t any fan interest in this fight. Indeed, if you look around the boxing internet forums you’ll find very little discussion about this fight.

Morales said to suljos.com “We have made some changes and we will prove that we are better. We have experience and we will make Garcia look bad. We are superior to him…My performance will be very different from the one from Houston.”

Morales certainly looks in better shape this time around compared to the last. Part of that is because he’s not coming off of gallbladder surgery like he was when he fought Garcia last March. Morales really shouldn’t have taken that fight that close to having been in major surgery, but he’s the one that decided to do this so you can’t blame Garcia. He did what he had to do to beat a vulnerable fighter.

I don’t think that’s the reason why Morales lost the fight, however. He lost because Garcia was the younger, quicker, and stronger fighter. What Morales and his fans seem to forget was that Morales’ best weight was bantamweight, and here he is fighting three divisions above that weight and at an advantage age of 36. Of course, he’s not going to fight well given his age and the fact that he’s fighting so high above his best weight.

This is a make or break fight for Morales. If he loses to Garcia, Morales will likely retire from boxing because it will be his third loss in his last four fights and that pretty much tells you that Morales doesn’t have it anymore. He may fight well enough to give Garcia a lot of problems, but if he gets beaten again I imagine Morales will choose to retire father than sticking around and ending up like a joke at some point.
