Bundrage, 39, has been fighting rarely since 2009, fighting only once per year. He defeated Cory Spinks to pick up the International Boxing Federation 154 pound title back in August 2010, and has defended the belt twice, beating Sechew Powell and Spinks.

Bundrage is hoping he can get a unification bout with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who also is with Golden Boy.

Bundrage said to Dan Rafael at ESPN “You know who I was looking for – he got red hair and he looks like Woody Woodpecker. I want Canelo. I don’t think that Canelo wants to fight me. He would rather fight Floyd, a bigger fight and a smaller guy. But that’s the fight I want.”

Golden Boy may have little choice but to make an Alvarez-Bundrage fight if they want to keep Alvarez busy with interesting fights because they may have problems putting together fights between Alvarez and Mayweather, and they could have problems getting Miguel Cotto for Alvarez. If they can’t make those fights the alternatives aren’t so great. Alvarez is going to have to fight the winner of the Erislany Lara vs. Vanes Martirosyan bout next year, and that’ll be tough for Alvarez if Lara emerges as the guy he has to wind up fighting.

Bundrage can really punch. He’s not very fast and he doesn’t move all that well, but he’s got great upper body strength that he uses to bludgeon his opponents into submission. It would be a tough fight for Alvarez because Bundrage is a legit junior middleweight and not a welterweight or a light welterweight like some of the guys that Alvarez has been fighting consistently for the past year.
