Image: Rigondeaux vs. Marroquin on SaturdayBy Allan Fox: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (10-0, 8 KO’s) will be seeing what he can do against highly thought of Top Rank prospect Robert Marroquin (22-1, 15 KO’s) on Saturday night on the undercard of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This fight is going to be seen by millions of boxing fans giving the 31-year-old Rigondeaux a great chance of winning over countless fans if he can beat Marroquin as impressively as he’s beaten his last three opponents Willie Casey, Rico Ramos and Teon Kennedy. Marroquin, 22, is in the same class as those guys, maybe a little worse. But Rigondeaux needs to adapt to whatever Marroquin brings to the ring in this fight and quickly look to take him out as fast as possible to look good.

It’s sometimes not easy to look good when you’re put in with a prospect instead of a top contenders because the motivation isn’t there. Marroquin isn’t in Rigondeaux’s class and really shouldn’t be in the same ring with him. However, given that Marroquin is one of the Top Rank fighters, Rigondeaux will have to settle for fighting him instead of a more worthy opponents. This fight kind of shows you how the top promotional companies like to keep their own fighters facing one another instead of opponents from different promotional companies.

The southpaw Rigondeaux is one of the best body punchers and counter punchers in the sport today. He takes advantage of his opponents mistakes by landing hard counter shots to the midsection and the result is often a knockout. It’s not just just his counter punching and power that makes him so good, it’s also his hand speed and boxing IQ. He’s so fast and he’s so smart there. He’s able to take advantage of openings that his opponents present to him. But with his power he finishes them off quickly.
