Las Vegas, NV – Canelo Alvarez proved to the world and to Jaime Munguia he is still the undisputed king. The 27-year-old volume puncher was to be yet another tough test for the aging champion. Canelo utilized his experience, defensive prowess, and precise counter punching to minimize the offensive effectiveness of Munguia. Although he threw 127 punches more than Canelo; Munguia landed less connecting on 170 punches of 663 thrown. In comparison to Canelo who connected on 234 punches of 536 thrown (Compubox).

Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) started the match customarily slow assessing Munguia’s skill, rhythm, and timing. Once he obtained the data he mounted his offensive attack, dropping Munguia with a 2-punch combination in the fourth round. Landing a left hook, followed by a right uppercut sending Munguia to the canvas to the sound of the roaring crowd at the T-Mobile Arena. This was the turning point of the match, Canelo cementing his dominance outlanding Munguia (43- 1, 34 KOs) in every round thereafter.

At the post fight press conference Canelo stated that he felt Munguia was slow, and he could see his punches coming. Allowing him to catch and slip his punches. Canelo controlled the range and posed a difficult target for Munguia to hit. Munguia stated Canelo possesses the experience and skill set of a great champion. The judges ruled it unanimously for Canelo Alvarez scoring the bout 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112. At the end of the match with David Benavidez seating ringside Canelo was asked who he would fight next, Canelo stated he would think about it and discuss it with his team, he then paused and stated he’s earnt the right to dictate terms and to fight whoever he wants, whenever he wants, stating the names of all the former champions he’s defeated throughout the years. When he was pressed about Benavidez again, he stated he would do so if the money is right.

Another potential opponent for Canelo Alvarez, is Edgar Berlanga Jr. who was in Vegas for the Cinco De Mayo festivities. The WBA named Berlanga the mandatory challenger for Canelo’s WBA title belt. Berlanga, after the fight tweeted a mockup promo picture of him and Canelo for a potential September bout. This could setup another potential undisputed versus undefeated challenger for Canelo who would face another up and coming star. Berlanga is known for his heavy hands having started his career with 16 straight first round knockouts. He just recently defeated Padraig McCrory in February of this year by technical knockout in the 6th round.
