Image: DeGale faces Wilczewski for EBU title on SaturdayBy Scott Gilfoid: James DeGale (10-1, 8 KO’s) is going to make sure he dominates EBU super middleweight champion Piotr Wilczewski (29-1, 10 KO’s) at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, England.

DeGale doesn’t want to lose another controversial decision like he did in his last fight against George Groves last May, and the only way that the 25-year-old DeGale can do that is to dominate and stop his opponents.

Wilczewski has got good skills and is arguably a more complete fighter than Groves. He’s got more facets to his game and is the type that keeps you guessing what he’ll be doing next. DeGale will have to speed up the pace if he wants to beat Wilczewski, because DeGale’s bad habit of slowly walking down his opponents won’t get him past the fighter with more nimble feet like Wilczewski. DeGale has to get on his toes and sprint to catch up the runners, and I’m hoping that Wilczewski use too much movement on Saturday because the fight could end up being unwatchable.

“I will never ever leave it that close [speaking about the Groves fight] for someone to nick the fight off me,” DeGale said to morningstaronline.co.uk. “Having a rematch, I would stick it straight on him, and believe you and me, that wouldn’t go 12 rounds.”

I believe DeGale. He was much too strong for Groves when he upped the pressure in the 2nd half of the fight, appearing to win every round from the 5th on my scorecard, along the 1st round. But it was those crucial 2nd through 4th rounds that may have convinced the judges that Groves was the better fighter in that bout, because it certainly couldn’t have been from the 2nd half rounds because Groves was running and taking punishment.

DeGale needs the win over Wilczewski to put him in position to get a world title shot against the winner of the fight between WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz and Mikkel Kessler.
