Schaefer: We have no problem with Mares fighting Agbeko in a rematch

By Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, the promoter for IBF bantamweight champion Abner Mares (22-0, 13 KO’s), says that he has no problems with Mares fighting Joseph Agbeko (28-3, 22 KO’s) again in a rematch and that he’s open to it.

This comes after the International Boxing Federation ordered Mares to give Agbeko a rematch by December 14th due to the constant low blows that Mares landed in his 12 round majority decision last Saturday night.

The IBF decided to force Mares to give Agbeko a rematch because the referee working the fight Russell Mora failed to deduct points from Mares for low blows.

Schaefer said this to Ringtv: “Since the IBF has ordered a rematch, then, you know, we have no problem with that. As a matter of fact, I was already on the all with Ken Hershman this morning.

It’s nice that Schaefer isn’t kicking and screaming about this, because some promoters might not have been happy at the IBF forcing Mares to give Agbeko a rematch.

However, this is a situation where the boxing world is pretty much united in the condemnation of the fouling and the lack of penalizations for Mares.

This wasn’t the first time that Mares had been involved in a fight that had a lot of fouls. His bout before the Agbeko against Vic Darchinyan was in a lot of ways similar to the Agbeko fight because Mares landing a great deal of shots below the belt line in that fight but was only penalized once.

Mares’ team had been hoping to set up a unification bout against WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire. But with the controversy surrounding the Agbeko-Mares fight, Donaire and his promoter Bob Arum didn’t want to take a fight against Mares at this time.
