Sergio Martinez not interested in Margarito, wants Pacquiao or Mayweather

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) won’t be satisfied with a revenge fight against Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO’s). Martinez doesn’t want to be the one that sends the deteriorating Margarito into retirement.

Martinez has other ideas about who he wants to fight. He would like to take on either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr next, not the recently beaten up Margarito.

In an interview by Cadena 3, Martinez made it clear that he’s not looking to fight Margarito, saying “I don’t want to be the boxer who retires Antonio Margarito. He’s going to end up in bad shape. He is not doing well after the beating that Pacquiao gave him.”

Margarito has lost two out of his last three fights, and hasn’t beaten a quality fighter since his win over Miguel Cotto two years ago. You can’t blame Martinez for not wanting to waste his time beating up someone who probably had no business being in the ring with Pacquiao on November 13th.

Margarito was hand-picked by Bob Arum to fight Pacquiao to give the Filipino an opponent so that he could win his 8th world title. Margarito served his purpose, but he’s not in the same class as Martinez and would likely get destroyed at this point. 10 years ago, a young Margarito stopped Martinez in the 7th round in 2000. A lot has changed since then, and Margarito would get totally dominated by Martinez if they were to fight now.

Instead of fighting Margarito, which would be doing Arum a big favour, Martinez has set his sights on Mayweather and Pacquiao. Martinez says “I am not sure which one I will be fighting. But it is going to be a great fight.”
