Floyd Mayweather Jr. verbally criticized Devin Haney’s dad, Bill Haney, who went missing after his son’s loss to Ryan Garcia last Saturday night in their headliner match at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Mayweather Jr. noted that Bill had been talking about his son, WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney, having taken the torch from Floyd, saying this is Devin’s era, but then he disappeared, going MIA after Dev met with a crushing three-knockdown, 12-round majority decision defeat against Garcia.
“Normally he’s right there like a parrot on Devin’s shoulder. That man was on a milk carton, he went missing,” said Floyd Mayweather Jr. to Fighthype about how Bill Haney was nowhere to be found after his son, WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney’s loss to Ryan Garcia last Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York.
It was strange not to see Bill talking it up after the fight, muddying the water by coming up with excuses about what went wrong. Fans were expecting Bill to give a ‘Mistakes were made’ type of speech, and then making a big production about Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) coming in 3.2 lbs over the weigh-in limit last Friday.
Mayweather made it clear that Bill didn’t want to stay in there and face the music after the fight, stay in the hot seat to deal with the questions from the fans and media. Instead of staying and dealing with it like a soldier, Bill disappeared.
The defeat by Haney showed that he hadn’t taken the torch from Mayweather, and this wasn’t his era. What the fight does show is that his career is on shaky legs and that perhaps it was always just smoke and mirrors from the get-go.
In other words, Haney’s victories and fame were the result of strategic match-making, having a size advantage over his opposition, and his dad, Bill promoting him nonstop in the media, telling fans how great he is.
