Pacquiao vs. McGregor in Saudi Arabia?

MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons is calling for His Excellency Turki Alalshikh to host a fight between the 45-year-old retired Manny Pacquiao and former UFC champion Conor McGregor in Saudi Arabia. Interestingly,

Gibbons compares Pacquiao-McGregor to Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury fighting Francis Ngannou, viewing it as a similar thing in his mind.

Gibbons insists that the 35-year-old McGregor has improved since his tenth-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017. He doesn’t say how he knows that Mcgregor has improved, though, because he hasn’t fought since inside a boxing ring and hasn’t won a fight inside the octagon since 2020.

Also, Gibbons doesn’t say whether the Pacquiao vs. McGregor boxing match would be a non-exhibition that counts in the record books or another exhibition for the retired Filipino star.

Pacquiao hasn’t had a professional match since his loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021, but beating McGregor would be no problem, obviously, because that guy looked poor in his loss to Mayweather seven years ago.

It’s unlikely there would be much interest from fans in seeing a washed-up McGregor fighting the retired 45-year-old Pacquiao in Saudi Arabia, especially if it were to be put on PPV, which would seem to be a given.

It would be a tough sell for the Saudia to place Pacquiao vs. McGregor on PPV and expect fans to purchase it.

The Call for Saudi Arabia

“Saudi Arabia, let’s go. Conor-Manny, it is a beautiful place to do it,” said Sean Gibbons of MP Promotions to SilverVoice TV about his interest in the Saudis hosting a fight between Manny Pacquiao and former UFC champion Conor McGregor.

“It’s real simple because His Excellency Turki [Alalshikh] loves big events, and he’s putting on the biggest and the best. Not just in the field of boxing. He’s putting on soccer; he’s putting on snooker. So, it’s a very intriguing fight at this point,” said Gibbons when asked why the Saudis should stage a fight between Pacquiao and McGregor.

McGregor’s Improvement

“Manny, at his age, and Conor has improved so much since the [Floyd Mayweather fight [in 2017, which McGregor lost by a 10th round knockout]. I think it’s like the Tyson Fury-Ngannou and Ngannou and Joshua.

“It just brings two of the biggest names together. Two of the biggest names in combat sports in one of the biggest names in boxing, and that’s a really intriguing and fun fight,” said Gibbons.
