Is Mayweather avoiding Pacquaio?

By Gari Jones: It’s been nearly seven months since Floyd Mayweather Jr (W41 (KO25) L0 D0) fought and beat Sugar Shane Mosley (W46 (KO39) L6, DO) and while Mosley has fought once more since then (a draw with Sergio Mora September 18TH 2010) there’s been no sign as to which boxer Mayweather will fight next.

The world expected a showdown between Pacquaio and Mayweather back in March 13th 2010 with negotiations seeming to go well the fight looked set, but in the end the fight never happened on the basis that Mayweather supposedly threw in a last minute clause and wanted random blood testing several weeks before the fight would take place, Pacquiao declined for reasons best known to himself but it has been assumed Manny didn’t want blood drawn from his body so close to a fight as it could hamper his preparations and weaken him in training.

After demolishing Margarito over two weeks ago the door is wide open for both camps to come together and arrange a fight date. With Pacquaio wanting to hang up his gloves soon and concentrate on politics the clock is ticking away. The lack of action from Mayweather might suggest he’s a little hesitant to make this fight happen. It cant be helped but to think Mayweather is biding his time in the hopes Pacquaio will call it a day and Floyd can avoid the one man who in most people’s eyes could actually end the Pretty Boy’s winning streak.

After the master display Pacquiao put up against Margarito its very possible the fight will never come to fruition. The reason for this is Floyd knows that Manny is the most dangerous fight for him to take on, although there’s fans who would argue Mayweather has very the best technical defence and Pacquiao would fail to land a shot. The shoulder roll which has become Mayweather’s trademark in recent years has proven very tough to break down, but while good defence can stop you getting hurt, Manny has the speed, tynastity, power and stamina to out work and out punch Mayweather for a full twelve rounds.

Against Margarito the fists were really flying as Pacquaio threw just over 1000 punches with an estimated 480 of them landing. Manny might not throw as many shots against Mayweather as he did Margarito as Floyd wont keep coming forward all the time, you can still expect Pacquiao to throw well over 700 if the fight were to go the distance, and it’s just not possible even for someone like Mayweather too withstand that number of punches for 36 minutes.

I think Mayweather knows this and in order to protect his legacy and maintain his unbeaten record, Floyd is going to avoid Pacquaio like the plague but he could be doing his reputation more harm than good. By not taking this fight on fans could start questioning him and wheter he is scared of Pacquaio.

The fans of boxing that have been treated to some real lackluster events lately are expecting this fight to happen. Before both fighter’s calls it a day one of them would very much like to win the distinction of who is the best P4P fighter in the world I think Floyd cant walk away from this match-up. Whether this fight happens or not (I HOPE SO MUCH SO), I would expect Pacquaio to win by points decision as he is too fast and too intense for Mayweather too handle.
