Image: Schaefer says Mayweather will fight Pacquiao "When the time is right"By Chris Williams: For boxing fans urgently waiting for the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao to take place, they’re just going to have to put a sock in it and learn to practice some patience while Mayweather clears up his legal issues before he can take on and beat Pacquiao. Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said in an interview at Ringtv.com, “I can assure you that when the time is right, he’ll [Mayweather] fight Pacquiao and beat Pacquiao.”

Some boxing fans have things a bit twisted about Mayweather, thinking he’s afraid to fight Pacquiao for fear of losing his ‘0’ but Schaefer correctly points out that it’s not the case. Schaefer says “These comments that he wants to protect his ‘0’ are silly.” I have to agree with Schaefer. Mayweather can’t fight Pacquiao right now with all the legal woes weighing him down right now. The original plan, before the legal stuff reared it’s ugly head, was for Mayweather to take the rest of 2010 off and then fight Pacquiao in early 2011.

However, with all the problems happening to Mayweather one after another in the past couple of months, the last thing he’s thinking about is boxing. He’s bigger issues to deal with right now and I think most fans would agree if they knew all that Mayweather has on his plate as far as legal problems go. It’s like a mountain that Mayweather has to deal right now, and it would be insane for him to try and plan a boxing event as big as Mayweather vs. Pacquiao with those kinds of problems.

Schaefer says “People should be smart enough to realise that he’s in the middle of legal proceedings. His focus and energy is on that, cleaning his name, not on making a fight. That’s just common sense. Anything else would be disrespectful to a judge or the legal system. He could say, OK, lets fight Pacquiao in May or whenever and make a deal. How would a judge feel about that? You just don’t do that.”

Schaefer is right. Boxing fans need understand how complicated all of Mayweather’s legal problems are right now. This is something can affect his future long term and the last thing he needs to be doing right now is planning on fighting Pacquiao.
