Calderon-Segura prediction: Expect a boring fight that ends with a head clash

By Matt Stein: Under normal circumstances, I would be really looking forward to this Saturday’s light flyweight match-up between World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (34-0-1, 6 KO’s) and WBA light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (24-1-1, 20 KO’s) at the Coliseo Mario ‘Quijote’ Morales, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

However, 35-year-old Calderon has had problems finishing fights when matched against good quality opposition in the past two years. Oddly enough, when matched against high quality fighters, Calderon’s fights end with a bad cut from head butts. Three out of Calderon’s last four bouts have ended with nasty cuts caused by head clashes.

I’m hoping that doesn’t happen here, but given how dangerous of a puncher Segura is, I see a head butt coming on that will cause this fight to end prematurely. Segura is the real deal. He’s a huge puncher who has stopped five out of his last fights since losing a 12 round decision to Cesar Canchila in 2008.

Segura has since avenged the defeat by stopping Canchila in the 4th round in their rematch in March 2009. Segura has been rolling along since the loss and is now ready to take Calderon’s WBO title if he can get out of the fight without being cut up by a head butt, that is. Calderon’s a decent fighter but he’s looked vulnerable when taking on high quality opposition lately and the head butts may have saved him from suffering losses.
