Image: Segura vs. Calderon II on 4/2By Jason Kim: Ivan Calderon (34-1-1, 6 KO’s) will be going back for more punishment in a rematch with WBO light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (26-1-1, 22 KO’s) on April 2nd at the Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. Calderon, 36, was stopped in the 8th round last year by Segura in August, and took a lot of punishment in that fight. Why Calderon would want to face Segura a second time after the beating he took last fight is the question. Calderon couldn’t handle the body attack from Segura and folded in the 8th under a furious body attack from Seguara

It wouldn’t seem that Calderon will have a better chance in a rematch, because Segura’s high pressure style of fighting, his high volume punch rate, his better better power and four inch height advantage was just too much for the little 5’0″ Calderon to handle. Although Calderon fought as hard as he could last time out, he couldn’t handle the incoming fire from Segura and folded in the 8th.

Calderon seems to think he’s going to out-box Segura in the rematch, saying this in an article by Dan Rafael of ESPN: “I’m going to show my boxing, my movements to win this title again. I want to thank Segura for giving me this opportunity.”

I think Calderon is kidding himself if he thinks he’s going to win this fight. Segura never gave Calderon a minute to breath and virtually no space with which to run around like he usually does. In a rematch, Calderon can move around as much as he wants, but Segura will be right there with him looking to land his big power shots. This is likely going to be as one-sided as their last fight.
