By Jim Dower: Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (34-1, 6 KO’s) will be taking on the current WBO light flyweight champion Giovani Segura (26-2, 22 KO’s) in a rematch on April 2nd in Mexico in a still to be determined venue.

Calderon, now 36, was stopped in the 8th round last year in August by the 28-year-old Segura in an exciting fight that saw both fighters taking a lot of shots. However, Calderon, a fighter with little power, couldn’t slow up the powerful high pressure from Sugura and ended up getting stopped in the 8th. Their fight was the fight of the year by Ring Magazine.

Segura’s manager Rich Mota, had this to say in an interview at Ringtv.com: “We always wanted the fight but Giovanni was being offered chump change for a while. He knew he would have to take short money and fight in Puerto Rico for first fight because Calderon was the champ, but this time around, he’s the champ. He [Segura] knows he’s going to go through hell to make the 108 pounds but he’s willing to do it because this is a fight everyone wants to see. After the rematch, he can go to 112 pounds.”

Calderon hasn’t fought since the loss to Sugura, while Segura has fought once, stopping Manuel Vargas in the 7th round last year in November at 112 pounds. The good news for Calderon is that even if he gets beaten by Segura again, which is likely because he doesn’t have the power or the offensive work rate to beat the younger fighter, Calderon will likely be able to move in and scoop up the WBO light flyweight title once Segura has moved up in weight.
