Thompson proves there are no experts in boxing

price49By Mark Havey: For a lot of boxing writers around the world it seemed a mismatch and they were certain of it. Tony Thompson would be whipped out by the hard hitting mountain. As a quiet and humble man, David Price had gained a lot of fans. His unbelievable power earned him even more.

Even certain American writers including those at Boxingnews24, refused to support their man. They called Tony Thompson an old man and echoed the thoughts of others, that this was a mismatch. I’m sure their articles will change dramatically.

The Echo Arena was buzzing with thousands of fans. David Price had seemed unbeatable and was on the right path for a title shot in the near future. Fans in Britain felt that David Price was the hardest puncher in the world and would simply knockout anyone he hit, and it would take just minutes to do it. To be fair Price was the better fighter. A right hook in round 2 sent him crashing down with a look of shock evident on the faces of the audience.

Price vows to come back after loss to Thompson

price48By Scott Gilfoid: British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price doesn’t see his 2nd round knockout loss to Tony Thompson tonight as being a big deal. Price sees it as just a blip on his career radar, and he feels that he’ll be right back where he was before this loss three fights from now.

Price said after the fight “I’ve been doing that to other people since I turned professional. It’s heavyweight boxing, nobody’s invincible. I’ll come back from it. I didn’t take a beating in there tonight; it was one of those shots. It caught my ear and my balance had gone…three fights down the line, this will be ancient history.”

It sounds like Price is rationalizing about his defeat. Coming back from a knockout like this won’t be easy, and the guys that he’s knocked out in the past aren’t doing so well. It’s a big deal getting knocked out. It’s not as if it’s a good thing, especially if he decides that he’s not going to try and avenge his defeat.

Price’s promoter Maloney collapses after his knockout defeat

price47By Scott Gilfoid: Frank Maloney, the promoter for British heavyweight champion David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s), reportedly collapsed at ringside following Price’s 2nd round knockout loss to 41-year-old American Tony Thompson tonight at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

This was supposed to be an easy fight for Britain’s best heavyweight, but Thompson hit Price with a right hand in the 2nd that sent him down to the canvas. The fight was then stopped after Price got back up because he was still too unsteady on his feet to continue. Price suffered a perforated eardrum for his left ear.

As for Maloney, he was taken away by ambulance after sinking to his knees while in conversation, according to the telegraph.co.uk.

Price’s knockout loss surely finishes, at least for now, his dreams of capturing a world title. This is a huge setback for the 29-year-old Price because it’s going to knock him backwards in the world rankings, and he’s probably going to need to think seriously about trying to avenge his loss by facing Thompson again to try and prove the loss was just a fluke.

Thompson smashes Price

price46By Steven Ocallaghan: David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) was just knocked out and I’m still in shock. Price has just been knocked out in the 2nd round by veteran American Tony Thompson. I must admit m still in shock at how easy Price was knocked out. Price seamed to be in control but I suppose in the heavyweight division, if a guy who is almost 19st lands, it will hurt but it wasn’t a clean punch. What I’m most worried about Price is his inability to take a punch.

Price said the punches that hurt you are the ones you don’t see. I hate being hard on big Pricey but he is wrong. If he can’t see Thompson’s punches coming he is not going to go anywhere. He admitted he didn’t see it.

Thompson stops Price in 2nd round – Breaking News!!

price44By Scott Gilfoid: The David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) hype train came to a grinding halt tonight with him getting blasted out in a 2nd round TKO to 41-year-old American Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Thompson landed a nothing of a right hand to the side of Price’s head in the second, causing Price to collapse on the canvas in a heap. It looked at first like Price had injured one of his long legs, but when he staggered to his feet it was clear he was badly hurt from the shot from Thompson. Price then staggered around on his feet making it necessary for referee Steve Gray to halt the fight at 2:17 of the round.

Thompson defeats Price in shocking upset!

price43By Scott Gilfoid: American heavyweight Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) beat Great Britain’s best heavyweight in David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) tonight by a 2nd round TKO to expose him as being little more than hype in front of a packed house in Liverpool, England.

Thompson was getting dominated in the 2nd round when he decided to test Price’s chin to see if the rumors about his vulnerability to hard shots was true. As it turns out it was true, as Thompson put Price down with a glancing right hand that Thompson threw while stumbling over Price’s lead left foot.

It was one of the strangest punches that you’ll see because it barely landed due to Thompson almost falling while throwing it. However, the shot caused Price to drop like a sack of potatoes on the canvas.

David Price vs. Tony Thompson tonight in Liverpool

price2228By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) will continue with his steady course of facing aging fighters when he takes on 41-year-old Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

This is what you call a fight where a young lion with a questionable chin faces an old toothless lion with little time left at the top of the sport. Thompson, #11 IBF, is still ranked in the top 15, but he’s not going to remain there for long unless he goes back to fighting the 2nd tier opposition he’d been facing from 2008 to 2011.

Thompson was destroyed by IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO last July in a 6th round stoppage, and he’s not fought since. It’s not so much that Thompson was stopped in that fight, but how incredibly awful he looked.

Tony Thompson feels doping should be allowed in sports

thompson323By Scott Gilfoid: David Price’s opponent for this Saturday heavyweight Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) believes doping should be allowed in sport, although he wouldn’t ever use drugs himself for personal gain in sport. Thompson, 41, faces the 6’8” Price at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. This part of Price’s series of 40-year-olds he’s been facing. There’s no word if Price’s next opponent will also be in his 40s as well.

Thompson said to the thesun.co.uk “I think they should allow doping, period…It’s an issue of choice…Sports is what it is – entertainment…you go to the movies to be entertained…it’s just sports.”

Price must KO Thompson if he wants to be taken seriously

price111By Thomas Cowan: British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion takes another step towards a world title challenge when he faces American veteran Tony Thompson on Saturday. Price has a 15-0 record, with 13 of his wins coming by way of knockout but he needs to be fighting more rounds if he is going to be ready to challenge for a title.

The 6ft 8in giant hasn’t really got anything out of his last few fights because the likes of Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton clearly didn’t belong in the same ring as him.

Price feels that 41-year-old Thompson is the man to correct this problem. He told British newspaper Daily Mail, “I ought to get rounds off a fighter of Tony Thompson’s calibre. He’s gone 17 rounds with Wladimir Klitschko who’s the best in the world. I’ll be prepared for rounds – that’s for sure – he’s going to ask questions of me.”
