price43By Scott Gilfoid: American heavyweight Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) beat Great Britain’s best heavyweight in David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) tonight by a 2nd round TKO to expose him as being little more than hype in front of a packed house in Liverpool, England.

Thompson was getting dominated in the 2nd round when he decided to test Price’s chin to see if the rumors about his vulnerability to hard shots was true. As it turns out it was true, as Thompson put Price down with a glancing right hand that Thompson threw while stumbling over Price’s lead left foot.

It was one of the strangest punches that you’ll see because it barely landed due to Thompson almost falling while throwing it. However, the shot caused Price to drop like a sack of potatoes on the canvas.

To Price’s credit, he got up immediately, but he stand up straight and kept weaving while referee Steve Gray was looking him over. You could see that Gray was about to let the fight continue, but with Price swaying back and forth it would have been a huge mistake if he had.

Thompson would have surely finished Price off with a big left hand or right hook that would have poleaxed Price. I mean, he was that hurt to where all it would have taken is a one halfway decent shot and Price would have pitched forward face first in Manny Pacquiao style.

Price was hardly hit in the first round because Thompson was thinking defense and trying not to get hit. He landed a few jabs, but really wasn’t giving Price any problems.
In the 2nd, Thompson got a feel for Price’s power in the first 30 seconds of the round when Price went straight at him, throwing some big shots and working him over to some extent on the ropes.

This is usually when Price destroys his hapless opponents, but Thompson, although badly out of shape at 262 lbs, wasn’t going to cave in for Price. Instead, Thompson kept his head and started to land some big shots. Moments later, Thompson put Price down with a right hand to the head.

I thought Price went down from having his feet tangled at first because the punch was one of the weakest that you’ll ever see. But when Price got up it was painfully obvious that he was badly hurt and wasn’t going to be able to finish the fight.

Other boxing results on the card:

Kevin Satchell UD 12 Luke Wilton
Steven Lewis pts 4 Craig Kelly
Louis Cuddy TKO 1 Ferenc Zsalek
Dean Mills TKO 4 David Burke
