Austin Trout seeks a rematch with Canelo Alvarez

trout011By Amos: Boxing fans had the pleasure to witness the highly anticipated WBC & WBA Junior Middleweight unification bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Austin “No Doubt” Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s). It was the fight which declared Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as the undisputed champion of the division.

However, after watching the fight, Austin Trout acknowledges he needed to do much, much more in order to decisively win the fight. Trout believed he would be able to out-box Canelo and completely dominate the fight to win a “lopsided decision.” However, Canelo surprised the boxing public and even Trout with an improved defense and footwork which had not been seen before. Canelo did not merely come forward and had a much different game plan than some writers thought he would have.

Trout: I beat Canelo, and I want a rematch!

YouTube video
By Dan Ambrose: After having now watched his fight against WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) from last month on April 20th, former WBA junior middleweight champion (26-1, 14 KO’s) now firmly believes that he did more than enough to get the decision against the 22-year-old Canelo in their fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Canelo to attend Mayweather-Guerrero bout

canelo99By Dan Ambrose: Still hoping to get a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September, WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be attending this Saturday’s fight between Mayweather Jr. and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Miguel Cotto will also be in attendance, and I imagine he might want to fight the winner of the Mayweather-Guerrero fight as well. I suspect that Cotto has a much better chance of fighting Mayweather than Canelo does.

Canelo weighed 172 lbs. for his fight last month against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout in San Antonio, Texas, and he badly wants to fight the much smaller, 150 pound Mayweather Jr. in September, and Golden Boy Promotions also wants that fight to happen due to the huge money it would bring in for them.

Why isn’t Canelo calling out Golovkin or Andre Ward?

canelo44By Dan Ambrose: In his recent win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last month, WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) scaled in at 172 lbs after rehydrating for the bout after making the 154 pound limit a day earlier.

That’s 18 pounds of rehydration weight that Canelo gained back, and obviously that can’t be good for the human body to strip off that much water weight in dehydrating and then putting it back on within 24 hours to fight. The 172 pounds puts Canelo squarely in the light heavyweight class, because the 168 division ends at 168 and anything from 169 to 175 is considered a light heavyweight.

Chavez Jr: Canelo still has a lot to prove

canelo6By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. feels that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) hasn’t yet arrived at the elite level in his career after his close decision win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout this month in San Antonio, Texas.

While the judges had the fight scored 115-112, 118-109 and 116-111 for Canelo, Chavez Jr. saw the fight as a really close one.

Chavez Jr. said to ESPN Deportes “It was more close than many of the judges had it…he had trouble because Trout is a difficult fighter.

Canelo: Hoping Guerrero will beat Mayweather on Saturday

Floyd Mayweather gets gloves onBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez thinks Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) will defeat unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) this Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Canelo is really hoping that takes place because his chances of getting a fight with Guerrero are quite high, even though Canelo would likely out-weigh Guerrero by 25 pounds by the time they stepped foot in the ring.

Canelo said to Showtime: “All the work we put in the strategy we had for this fight went very well, and most importantly we won. It was a fight where we couldn’t throw a lot of punches because he’s a southpaw because of the style. I came to fight my fight and win the way I thought I would win and I’m very pleased with the victory and I’m going to repeat:

Canelo’s trainer: We are ready for Sergio Martinez or Mayweather on September 14th

canelo765By Dan Ambrose: Eddie Reynoso, the trainer for WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canel” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), says that they are targeting Floyd Mayweather Jr. and/or Sergio Martinez for Canelo’s next fight date on September 14th in a fight that will likely be put back in Texas.

No word about the open scoring that the World Boxing Council used to great effect, but you’d have to figure that’ll be part of the deal as well. Having the fight in Texas plus semi-open scoring for Canelo’s next fight, which would likely be a deal breaker for landing Mayweather or Martinez.

A Look Back On Last Weeks Boxing

fury54By Shane Newsome: With a heavy schedule of fights on both sides of the pond its easy for a fight or a whole fight card to have been missed by a casual boxing fan recently and could be forgiven, and if this is the site you use for all you boxing news (which for a lot of people that may be the case) then its too easy to get drawn in by a bias writers opinion of a fight.

Starting in Blackpool, Lancashire, UK and the main event on this card between Brian Rose (23-1-1) and Joachim Alcine (33-4-1) here was a case of a European level fighter in Brian Rose attempting to begin to build a bridge towards world level and for this he picked a once formidable opponent in former WBA Light-Middleweight Champion Joachim Alcine, Rose acquitted himself well in a relatively uneventful (in comparison to the other fights on the night) fight and walked away with a win via a 12th round TKO.

Cotto leading candidate for Canelo’s next fight on September 14th

cotto5By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions has confirmed that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be fighting next on September 14th against a still to be determined opponent and venue. He’s waiting on the results of the Robert Guerrero vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight to try and get the winner of that fight.

Canelo’s manager Eddie Reynoso would like to have Canelo face Mayweather, as would De La Hoya. However, given that Canelo out-weighs Mayweather by 25 pounds when he fights, it’s not likely that Mayweather is going to agree to fight someone with that kind of huge weight advantage over him, just as Canelo would likely never agree to fight cruiserweights Marco Huck and Denis Lebdev, who would have a 25 pound weight advantage over Canelo.
