Canelo: Hoping Guerrero will beat Mayweather on Saturday

Floyd Mayweather gets gloves onBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez thinks Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) will defeat unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) this Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Canelo is really hoping that takes place because his chances of getting a fight with Guerrero are quite high, even though Canelo would likely out-weigh Guerrero by 25 pounds by the time they stepped foot in the ring.

Canelo said to Showtime: “All the work we put in the strategy we had for this fight went very well, and most importantly we won. It was a fight where we couldn’t throw a lot of punches because he’s a southpaw because of the style. I came to fight my fight and win the way I thought I would win and I’m very pleased with the victory and I’m going to repeat: I want the best. We’ll look at the options, sit down, plan and choose the best fighter. What I think and what we all hope for is that Guerrero wins. Guerrero is a warrior and he has Mexican blood. It’s going to be a difficult and complicated fight for both of them. It’s going to be a great fight.”

It’s going to take an incredible fight for Guerrero to beat Mayweather because he’s probably not going to be able to count on winning a decision the way he did against Andre Berto last November. There are too many spotlights on this fight for Guerrero to get away the fouling that he did against Berto.

If Guerrero fouls like that, he’ll end up losing the fight on point deductions. I don’t think the referee would disqualify Guerrero, but he’ll end up blowing what little chance he has by losing points from his fouling. Holding and hitting, throwing elbows and other such fouls from Guerrero won’t likely be ignored by this referee Robert Byrd.

The fact that Canelo is hoping that Guerrero wins the fight tells you all you need to know about Canelo’s belief that he can land a Mayweather fight. If he believed he could get the Mayweather fight, he’d be pushing for him to win.

I do think Mayweather would agree to fight Canelo if it were an even playing field. You can’t expect Mayweather to fight a light heavyweight and you wouldn’t expect Canelo to fight a cruiserweight. The only way to even the playing field is to keep Canelo from rehydrating up to 172 or more for the fight, and the only way to do that is to have a strict rehydration clause to where Canelo can’t rehydrate to more than 154.

The fight will have to take place at 147 because that’s where Mayweather fights, and he doesn’t rehydrate to more than 150 lbs. So Canelo would have to agree to fight Mayweather at 147 and then agree to not rehydrate to more than 154. If Canelo goes past 154, then the fight is off. That’s the only way the fight would be fair. It wouldn’t be fair for Mayweather to come into the fight at 150 and fight Canelo weighing 172.

That would be like Canelo fighting a 194 pound cruiserweight. I’d wish Canelo a lot of luck in trying to beat a 194 pound cruiserweight because he’d take a beating. It’s the same thing. Canelo wants to fight a guy that weighs 22 pounds less than him, but Canelo would probably never even entertain the idea of fighting someone 22 pounds heavier than himself. Canelo’s not calling out cruiserweights like Marco Huck. He’s not even calling out super middleweights like Andre Ward, who weighs the exact same amount as Canelo when he steps inside the ring for his super middleweight bouts.
