Why isn’t Canelo calling out Golovkin or Andre Ward?

canelo44By Dan Ambrose: In his recent win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last month, WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) scaled in at 172 lbs after rehydrating for the bout after making the 154 pound limit a day earlier.

That’s 18 pounds of rehydration weight that Canelo gained back, and obviously that can’t be good for the human body to strip off that much water weight in dehydrating and then putting it back on within 24 hours to fight. The 172 pounds puts Canelo squarely in the light heavyweight class, because the 168 division ends at 168 and anything from 169 to 175 is considered a light heavyweight.

So, Canelo in calling out 147 pounders like Floyd Mayweather Jr. is asking him to fight a guy four divisions heavier than him. That doesn’t make sense unless you like the deck stacked heavily in your favor. What I don’t understand is why isn’t Canelo calling out WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golokin or WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Canelo would still have a weight advantage over Golovkin, who weighs around 165 for his middleweight bouts. That’s a nice 7 pound weight advantage for Canelo if he were to fight the hard hitting Golovkin. Granted, it’s not the 20+ weight pound advantage he’d have if he were to fight Mayweather, but it’s a good enough weight advantage to where it should give him at least a tiny advantage.

The most ideal opponent for Canelo, at least in terms of weight, would be Andre Ward. He fights at a little over 170 lbs. after he makes weight for his super middleweight bouts, so that puts him in the same exact weight range as Canelo.

Would Canelo ever call out Andre Ward and if not then why shouldn’t he? If Ward is the exact same weight as Canelo, then he should be willing to fight him. After all, Canelo is willing to fight someone who is 20+ pounds lighter than him, so he should be open to the idea of fighting someone his own weight.
