Golovkin: The man, the myth, the Hypocrite

1-o2arena-golovkin-brook-131

By Leigh K. Seto: In a day and age of smart phones and instant information, folklore of legends like Paul Bunyun seem as unlikely and as unheard of as Coca cola in a glass bottle. But the quiet rumbling even among the non-fanatics of boxing seem to be chirping about an undefeated fighter from Kazakhstan. Gennady Golovkin has had a slow rise amongst the flashier names and flashier styles of the sport that he has dominated foe after foe for just over a decade. His inability to garner earlier fame has been several key factors. No marquee opponents, late start in the sport and other stars getting the attention.

But as other stars fade, other stars rise. So here Golovkin is finally gaining some notoriety and respect well deserved. But with attention, also brings pundits with microscopes! The clamoring of a record full of the nameless victims and hypocrisy is also being heard now.

Brook’s heart will lead him to victory over GGG

golovkin-brook

By Leigh K. Seto Whether the public knows it or not Kell Brook is a throwback fighter from years gone by. It wasn’t long ago that fighters made fights not promoters. I remember Roy Jones Jr said one day I will win the heavy weight title, pundits laughed, but he did it. Roy believed in himself when no one else did.

A 5’10” fighter named Mike Tyson was beloved because he was a fearless little heavyweight that never fought anyone smaller than himself but took the heavyweight division by storm. Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Archie Moore, to name just a few successfully made the climbed through the upper divisions.

Pacquiao makes disappointing choice

Manny Pacquiao

By Leigh K. Seto: Manny Pacquiao as a young up and coming fighter was a dynamo only comparable to Roberto Duran himself. He was taking out not just hall of fame fighters like Cotto, Margarito and Hatton, but also legends like Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Oscar Dela Hoya and Juan Manuel Marquez. He garnered respect of the public and the world over.

Unfortunately, that fighter has been laid to rest. He has become the corporate with Bob Arum and those challenges are so far gone now, it’s just folk lore.

Pacquiao to take down Top Rank?

pac63

By Leigh K. Seto: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has been one of the single most influential figures in Boxing for decades. He has had run-ins inside and outside of ring. He has helped shaped the careers of many Legends in the ring Muhammad Ali, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao to name a few. He has made himself and his fighters very rich along the way. He graduated from Harvard Law and was hired by then President Kennedy to join his legal staff. Needless to say, Bob is a pretty smart guy.

Bob orchestrates the soap opera of boxing like a brilliant puppet master, choosing the right fights to keep his top fighters winning or matching his top fighters against each other so he wins either way. It’s not always popular, but its good business. The Manny Pacquiao vs. Terence Crawford fight has a similar story line to the not so distant past.

Keith Thurman, Boxing’s new Bright Star!

Image: Keith Thurman, Boxing's new Bright Star!

By Leigh K. Seto: As a long time fan of the sweet science and somewhat of a historian of the sport, I was pleased to see the Premier Boxing Champions match up last Saturday night on June 25 between WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight was televised on Showtime Boxing on CBS. It’s rare to see two fighters that are on the rise going toe to toe with each other and taking challenges that other top fighters seem to avoid. The Thurman vs Porter delivered on the hype an we were all watching.

Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter both have an old school style of fighting. With more engaged assaults which captivate and inspire their audience. Like the millions of viewers I was glued to my seat avoiding the occasional fridge trips and idle conversation this fight was exciting from the opening bell.

Golovkin not ready for Alvarez!

Image: Golovkin not ready for Alvarez!By Leigh K. Seto: In the era where PPV numbers are king, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the current WBC Middleweight champion, is the torch carrier of this new era. The assortment of Bubblegum belts has diluted their meaning and fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao exposed in recent past that belts are meaningless. Mayweather spent years avoiding Paul Williams and Pacquiao defended his title 7 times off guys who were rebounding after a loss.

Lets put this in perspective how corrupt these organizations still are. Canelo Alvarez is currently un-ranked by the WBA, the IBF, and the WBO in both Middleweight and Jr Middleweight divisions.

Canelo vs. Golovkin: Finally? or Never?

Image: Canelo vs. Golovkin: Finally? or Never?By Leigh K. Seto: It’s turning into the second coming of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao. But I’d like to address the very similar chants of “Coward” that was commonly used to describe Floyd not fighting Manny. I said it then and will say it again. Boxers aren’t cowards. I’m sure all of you personally know at least one fighter and that guy is willing to fight anyone win or lose. Now Saul “Canelo” Alvarez isn’t just one of those average fighters. He’s at the top of the food chain. I think he’d fight anyone. However, I don’t think his management will let him.

Now can he beat Triple G? Certainly. A human head can only withstand so much force and Canelo has made a career proving his power.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2 Unlikely for only ONE reason

1-IMG_8257By Leigh K. Seto: It took two rounds for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to take control of the “Fight of the Century” against Manny Pacquiao. From the start of the fight, Floyd was popping off his jab in the center of the ring with the distance he wanted, the pace he wanted and Pacquiao fans like myself shrieking “Uh oh!”.

Despite a shoulder injury that is being reported for Pacquiao, this fight was won by the fighter’s feet. Mayweather’s feet maintaining distance and Pacquiao’s feet not fast enough to keep up. Athletically and physically all of the advantages were in Floyd’s favor.

Ali or Mayweather – Who is the Greatest?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wsB-t57tFE
By Leigh K. Seto: I recently read an article that stated from Floyd Mayweather Jr. that he is better than the great Muhammad Ali. My first reaction was that this statement was laughable, but then I thought I should take a moment to delve into this subject.

Pacquiao will beat Mayweather Jr: Fight breakdown

floyd11222By Leigh K. Seto: Las Vegas made a news release this week that determined Manny Pacquiao would be a 3 to 1 underdog to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Most experts would agree that this line it warranted. Mayweather has the boxing skills to be considered one of greatest of all times.

Mayweather’s defense could be compared with a defensive specialist like Hall of Fame fighter Pernell Whitaker. However, not matching his defense with his offense like Roy Jones Jr. and Sugar Ray Leonard may be the key to why Pacquiao will be the first to beat him.
