Mayweather vs. Pacquiao unlikely to happen

floyd7777By Leigh K. Seto: The top two boxing networks are HBO and SHOWTIME. It has been widely publicized that the networks would have to work together in order for the Mayweather/Pacquiao mega-fight to occur. Many point to the Lewis/Tyson fight to illustrate that these two networks have worked together in the past to make a fight happen.

Lewis was with HBO and Tyson was with Showtime. The problem is that people may not know that took 15 months for the networks to iron out and plenty of bad blood. Fast forward to today and these networks are still at war with each other and an amicable partnership seems highly unlikely. If these networks don’t agree again the fight will not happen. If you don’t believe me, Google Lewis vs Tyson, HBO vs Showtime.

Arum hands Mayweather his first Loss

floyd5By Leigh K. Seto: Back in June, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum suggested Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could meet Miguel Cotto on Cinco de Mayo. What is significant about that statement is its common knowledge in boxing circles to be one of two Mayweather fight dates.

It seemed like a far-fetched prospect, because who would dare challenge the pay-per-view king on one of his two annual dates. That’s like someone announcing “I’m moving the Super Bowl to March”.

Why Manny Pacquiao should accept the 70/30 split to land Mayweather fight

pac645Leigh K. Seto: Recently released PPV figures for Manny Pacquiao’s latest fight against “What’s his name?” were dismal. Regardless if the numbers were 300k or 400k its well below the 800k Arum announced prior to the fight. What Manny has to do is look at the negotiations with Floyd like two companies merging. Both partners will bring a certain amount of business to the table. What Mayweather will show are PPV numbers over the past 3 years that average over a million buys. What Manny is bringing to the table are substantially lower numbers. By the way, a few months ago he said he’d fight Mayweather for free! So declining any sum from Mayweather’s camp will make Manny’s plea look like a media stunt.

Let’s look at the benefits. First, he’ll be back in the lime light and big stage (His recent numbers indicate he’s lost casual fans). His style is exciting and fun. He will draw in more fans for his future fights and rekindle his brand in the U.S and abroad. Now, lets look at the money. In his last two fights he’s made 20 million a fight. The numbers for Canelo vs Mayeather were 2.2 million buys.

Rivalries: Mayweather and Pacquiao

Leigh K. Seto: Rivalries have always been the glue for sports to be successful. Whether its Manning vs. Brady or Bird vs. Magic. Boxing has its own version of this with Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.

Manny and Floyd’s conversation (just in jest!) below:

Manny- I have called you out publically and made it known that I’d like the fight to take place.
