By Jim Maltzman: Ryan Garcia has accepted the fight with Luke Campbell, and negotiations will begin immediately. A lot of people were saying that Ryan (20-0, 17 KOs) wouldn’t take this difficult fight against Campbell (20-3, 16 KOs) and that he would look for a way out.

Ryan has the wrong style for Campbell, who gets hit a lot with his aggressive manner of fighting. Campbell is a good fighter, but he’s not at the level where he the top guys are at in the top tier. That may cost Campbell the fight.

Once again, Ryan has proved his doubters wrong, and he’s chasing greatness. This is a massive step up fight for Ryan, and it’s a type of match that will prove whether he’s a legitimate talent or a  product of hype. The 21-year-old Ryan didn’t have to take this fight.

Ryan didn’t have to take this fight

At his age, Garcia could have taken easy learning fights against lower-level opposition, and no one would have faulted him. This is a fight that a lot of boxing fans are picking the 32-year-old Campbell to beat King Ryan.

A massive amount of people don’t see Ryan as a quality fighter, and they question his boxing ability. They see Ryan as one-dimensional, a guy that relies on his left hook 90% of the time, and he doesn’t have much else to offer.

For Ryan to take the fight with the 2012 Olympic gold medalist Campbell, it shows how much self-belief he has. It also tells you about Garcia’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions for them to allow him to take on Campbell. Golden Boy could have blocked the fight, but they’re letting Ryan sink or swim.

Ryan Garcia’s hand speed might be too much for Luke Campbell to handle in this fight, and he’s going to have a hard time landing shots. Every punch Campbell throws, he’s going to need to be mindful of Ryan’s whip-like left hook that he throws with knockout intentions. If Ryan Garcia lands that shot even once on the chin of Campbell, it could be all over.

The punching power that Ryan has on another level, and he’s going to be a threat to Campbell for every second of the fight. This fight is Ryan taking the next step in his career. It appears that Ryan is trying to match what Canelo Alvarez did at the same age.

King Ryan following in Canelo’s footsteps

When Canelo was Ryan’s age at 21, he was fighting the likes of Shane Mosley and Kermit Cintron. At age 22, Canelo defeated Austin Trout, and he also fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. People had doubts about Canelo early on when he was Ryan’s age, and he proved people wrong.

“This is excellent news for the sport,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said on the Campbell vs. Garcia confirmation. “The winner is first for Devin Haney.”

The Campbell fight will show what kind of talent Ryan has. If he’s the fighter that people believe he is, he’ll destroy Campbell, and move on to bigger things. Ryan is confident enough to take the fight with Campbell, a fighter that most boxing fans believe will beat him. Campbell has proven himself as one of the best at 135 over the years, and he’s facing a green Ryan Garcia.

This is uncharted territory for Ryan, who hasn’t fought at the level where Campbell is at this stage of his career. This is Ryan’s opportunity to show the boxing world how good he is as a fighter. Ryan can show his potential against Campbell, and that’s going to make it fun to watch.

Will Ryan show that he’s one of the best, or will he embarrass himself in getting exposed by the more experienced Campbell? For Ryan to compete for a world title, he needs to go through Campbell to get there. This fight will show Ryan’s growth as a fighter, and it’s going to be exciting to watch.

In Ryan’s recent contest, he’s shown that he’s progression at an alarming rate. The guys that Golden Boy has been putting him in with, Ryan has mowed down repeatedly.

Campbell will prepare Garcia for the elite level

This contest against Campbell will let Ryan display his growth potential. Facing Campbell will prepare Ryan for fights against Devin Haney, Vasily Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez, and Gervonta Davis.

These are the elite fighters at 135. A lot of people have doubts about whether Ryan can beat any of those guys. The Campbell bout will let us know how good Ryan Garcia is, and it’s up to him to show that he’s for real.

Campbell is a tough test for Ryan Garcia, and if he passes this test, we’ll see how good of a fighter he is at 135.

What will the doubters say after Ryan goes in there and beats Campbell? We’ll see a lot of fans needing to swallow humble pie afterward. Ryan has a lot to prove in this fight.

One area that Ryan will need to prove is his ability to take big shots. He hasn’t faced anyone with the kind of power that Campbell possesses.

Whatever the outcome, you’ve got to give Ryan Garcia credit for agreeing to the fight with Campbell. He didn’t have to take the match, but he did anyway.
