Ryan Garcia is interested in potentially facing former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence next following his win over Devin Haney last Saturday night.
Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) asked his followers on social media about their thoughts on him fighting Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) next, and the reaction has been positive. Spence would be a big test for Ryan on whether he’s got the ability to exist at 147.
It would be a more dangerous fight for Ryan than his clash against the light-hitting Haney last Saturday night, as Spence has a lot of power, and he would apply nonstop pressure.
Gauging Fan Interest
“Wait RG vs Errol would be crazy. Nah y’all want that? Let me hear you,” said Ryan Garcia on X, talking about being interested in fighting former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence next.
Ryan would likely need to move up to 154 for a fight with Spence to happen because the 34-year-old Errol has outgrown the welterweight division.
He looked drained in his last fight against Terence Crawford when he came off a long 17-month layoff to face him for the undisputed championship at welterweight, which he lost by a ninth-round knockout last July.
A More Dangerous Fight
It would be risky for Ryan to move up to 154 lbs to fight Spence in his first fight in the weight class. Of course, Garcia could fight Spence at a catchweight of 150 lbs, but that would still be a dangerous match-up for Ryan without getting acclimated to fighters in the junior middleweight division.
The money would be good for Ryan to fight Spence, considering he’s still arguably more popular than Crawford or any other fighter in the 154-lb division. At this point, Ryan will need to fight top-notch fighters for him to continue to make the kind of dough that he got for his fight against Haney.
If Ryan fights at welterweight, there will be pressure from fans for him to face IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, but that would be a crazy fight for him to take. Boots is clearly better than what’s left of Spence after his car crashes, eye injuries, and ring wear.
What Ryan should do is get acclimated for the 147-lb division by fighting there a year or more before he faces someone good. Spence is now a junior middleweight, and Ryan should hold off on fighting in that weight class until he’s competed at 147.
