James DeGale – A Future World Champion?

degale9By Kbarsey: After many months of debating and arguing I have come to the conclusion that James ‘Chunky’ DeGale will be the first British Olympic gold medalist to become a world champion. I do not believe this because a certain route to a title shot will be cleverly managed by his adviser’s or he’s been gifted his position within the governing bodies (unlike like his old foe George Groves, Just my opinion) but because I truly believe that he is that good.

Before his surgery prior to the Brandon Gonzales fight in May of 2014, I did have some issues with DeGale. At that time I labelled him the ‘What could have been fighter’.

Tons of potential and skills but always looked to work too hard to get passed lesser opposition. Then I remember seeing him in an interview with IFL TV and he must have repeated himself a hundred times over about being injury free and that the public will now see the real DeGale.

Cue Wembley. New promoter, new platform and a new lease of life. He obliterates no1 contender Brandon Gonzales. People can argue that the fight was stopped prematurely but I could not honestly see Gonzales lasting another round. What people should take in to consideration is that DeGale lost a close decision to George Groves earlier on his career. Now he was fighting on his under card where Groves was also making history. This spurred him on.

Then he takes a risky fight, fighting a man called Marco Antonio Periban. All boxing people know this guy was no mug. Yes, I can agree with some people that he came into the fight a little fleshy but none the less James DeGale destroys him. He looked slick, very awkward and very strong. The reason I only bring up his last two fight are because they are his two most notable wins in my eyes and he’s performed immensely.

Now we look at potential opposition and what I think the results will be. Carl Froch has just vacated the IBF title so there is a strong possibility DeGale’s next challenge will be Andre Dirrell on April 25th, I rate both Dirrell brothers and I know I am going to be heckled for this but I think DeGale beats them
