Pacquiao says to Mayweather: Let’s make history

By Chris Williams: With Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum all but ruling out a fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr on the Mexican holidays, which is when Mayweather always fights nowadays, Pacquiao decided to send a tweet to Mayweather on Wednesday to remind him that he’s still interested in fighting him in 2015.

What’s interesting about this tweet is that it doesn’t include Arum, because that’s who Pacquiao needs to be talking to if he really wants to fight Mayweather. If Arum is going to close off the Mexican holidays for Pacquiao to fight Mayweather then what does that tell you about Arum’s interest in matching the aging Filipino star against him?

Mayweather might interpret this tweet from Pacquiao as a case of him begging for a fight instead of him waiting in his lane.

Pacquiao has been taking to twitter recently to let Mayweather know that he wants to get a fight against him. Around Christmas, Pacquiao said “Floyd Mayweather, don’t be a boxing humbug. Let’s give the fans the fight they want. They have waited long enough,” Pacquiao said on his Twitter.

It sounds good that Pacquiao is showing interest Mayweather after all these years, but it won’t do any good unless Pacquiao can sit his promoter Arum down and convince him that it’s okay for him to fight on the Mexican holidays in May and September. It’s not as if Pacquiao hasn’t fought on these Mexican holidays in the past while promoted by Arum.

The only difference is that Arum is suddenly showing reluctance to make a fight between him and Mayweather on the Mexican holidays. Some boxing fans think Arum is just doing this because he wants to set up a money match between his fighter Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for May 2nd, and then later in the year match Pacquiao against Canelo on the Mexican holiday in September.

Pacquiao can send a 100 tweets to Mayweather, but it won’t make any difference if Pacquiao is unable to fight on the dates that Mayweather wants. Mayweather is the A-side, so if Arum is ruling out particular days and instead pushing for his own days in April or June, then that sounds like there’s very little chance of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight taking place.

If Arum wants the fight then he’s going to need to have Pacquiao available for any date in 2015 that Mayweather wants. If Pacquiao is going to have limits in terms of days he’s not available then he’ll very likely lose out on the fight. When a popular star like Mayweather offers you a fight, it’s in your best interest to agree to the fight dates he wants, because if you say no to his dates then that may be interpreted by him as you not having true interest in fighting him.
