Is Pacquiao too needy?

pac87By Chris Williams: We’ve seen how Amir Khan has endlessly chased WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr around hoping to get a fight against him. Khan has mentioned Mayweather constantly in interviews, and the response has been Mayweather showing zero interest in facing the 28-year-old Khan.

It must not be appealing for Mayweather when fighters appear desperate to fight him, because he doesn’t seem to respond to fighters like that. Now we’re having Manny Pacquiao sending tweets to Mayweather urging him to fight him in 2015.

Like Khan, Pacquiao is mentioning Mayweather’s name in interview and after interview in what seems to be an attempt by the 36-year-old Pacquiao to talk himself into the fight rather than waiting for Mayweather to initiate.

Mayweather did initiate by calling Pacquiao out on Showtime, but unfortunately Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has seemed less than excited about wanting to match Pacquiao with Mayweather on May 2nd, the day that Mayweather has requested. Arum says that the date belongs to the Mexican people, yet Miguel Cotto, a Puerto Rican, may end up facing the Mexican fighter Saul “Canelo Alvarez on that date.

Pacquiao probably isn’t helping himself by talking so much about a Mayweather fight, because he could come across as too needy to Mayweather and that might be a turnoff. Mayweather thinks Pacquiao needs money for his taxes, and he sees him as begging for the fight now. I don’t think Pacquiao is going to get the fight if he keeps asking for it. He needs to back off, and have Arum give the green light on whatever fight dates that Mayweather asks for.

If Arum says Pacquiao can’t fight on a particular date then there’s probably no way the fight can be made, because Mayweather isn’t going to give up his normal fight dates. If Arum doesn’t want to let Pacquiao fight Mayweather on the Mexican holidays then Pacquiao will have to face whoever Arum can find for him from his stable.

I don’t know why Arum wouldn’t match Pacquiao up on any date Mayweather asked, because Pacquiao seems to want the fight so badly. That’s up to Pacquiao and Arum to sit down and talk about which dates that he’s not available to fight. It’s just that Arum could hurt Pacquiao in his efforts to get the Mayweather fight if he’s going to keep him from fighting on the Mexican holidays when Mayweather plans on fighting.

Yesterday, Pacquiao said on his twitter “The ball will drop at midnight to usher in 2015. Let’s not drop the ball on fighting each other next year!”

This was the second tweet that Pacquiao sent to Mayweather about wanting to fight him, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. If Pacquiao wants the fight with Mayweather then he needs to get with his promoter Arum and talk about taking the fight when Mayweather wants the fight.

Pacquiao and Arum can call Mayweather’s bluff, of course, and assume that he’s not serious about him wanting to fight on May 2nd, but I think it’ll end badly for Pacquiao with him not getting the fight if Arum doesn’t agree to match him against Mayweather on that date.
