broner655By Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) could move down to 140 to take on some of the top fighters at that weight class after he defeats WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) in June 22nd at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Dan Rafael is reporting that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer there’s a possibility that the 23-year-old Broner may come down to 140 to take on some of the top fighters at that weight once he finishes his business with the 32-year-old Malignaggi in Brooklyn.

That doesn’t mean that Broner won’t continue to fight at 147. It just means he could dip down in the 140 pound division to face one of the following Golden Boy Promotions fighters: Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson or Lucas Matthysse.

You have to figure that the guy that Broner could wind up facing will the winner of Golden Boy’s 140 lb. tournament they’re holding. It wouldn’t make sense for Broner to face one of the losers of the tournament because that would be a big letdown.

Broner has taken a lot of heat from boxing fans for moving up to the welterweight division and skipping the arguably more dangerous 140 pound division. Fans don’t like the fact that Broner has selected the perceived weakest of the welterweight champions to face in Malignaggi instead of the more dangerous guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr and Devon Alexander.

Khan is being pretty much installed in the finals of the tournament without having to do anything other than beat a past his best 2nd tier welterweight in Julio Diaz. The rest of the guys in the tournament are going to have to sweat it out in tough fights to scratch their way to the finals.

I think the winner of the tournament will be either Matthysse or Garcia. Broner would then swoop down from the welterweight division and face one of those guys. As for Khan, he’s probably going to get his head taken off by Matthysse or Garcia and will be immediately back in the rebuilding stage once again with him facing more 2nd tier fighters to build him back up again.

If Khan gets knocked out again it’s pretty much over for him. I mean, he can get a new trainer if he wants, which he’s done after losses, but it likely won’t change anything. He’ll lose to Garcia and Matthysse because he won’t be able to handle their power and he’ll continue to struggle when he’s put in with guys with power.

I think Broner will defeat Garcia or Matthysse and end up making a huge name for himself in the process. That’ll be a really good fight.
