Broner: Marquez is easy money; his talent level aint that good

marquez999By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) wouldn’t mind facing Juan Manuel Marquez if he’s got an open schedule in the near future. Broner has a fight on Saturday night against Gavin Rees, but after that Broner doesn’t have anyone in mind for his next fight, and he’d like to take on Marquez to show the boxing world his talent.

Broner said to thaboxingvoice.com “[Marquez is] easy money too. He cool, [but] his talent level aint that good. He’s a good Mexican. We have time on our hands. I’m a fresh 23. I’m ok.”

In other words, if Marquez doesn’t want to fight him, which would seem like the case, then Broner doesn’t mind because he knows he’s still young, and he’s going to the next big thing in boxing. Marquez won’t be around too much longer, and neither will Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Broner will soon be the only game in town on HBO pay per view, and these type fighters will be kicking themselves for not having taken the chance to fight Broner when they had the opportunity.

I like Broner’s chances of beating Marquez. In fact, I think Broner’s style of fighting would be all wrong for Marquez. The Mexican fighter is a good one, but he’s more of a counter puncher and he does well against sloppy fighters like Manny Pacquiao. Broner wouldn’t leave the openings that Pacquiao would for Marquez, and that would force Marquez to be the one that leads.

Broner is a Mayweather clone in terms of his fighting style, and we saw what Mayweather was able to do to Marquez in dominating him by a 12 round unanimous decision four years ago in 2009. Mayweather beat Marquez by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision, and I suspect Broner would do the same thing.

Broner won’t get the fight with Marquez, however, because Marquez is finishing up his career right now. He’ll likely to fight Pacquiao for a 5th fight, and then maybe someone like Brandon Rios before he retires from the sport.

Broner has a fight this Saturday against Gavin Rees, but that’s not a really a fight. It’s more of a stay busy slaughter his promoters at Golden Boy set up for him to look good on HBO against an overmatched fighter from the UK.
