What to expect in 2013!

brook324By Rusty Nate: So the New Year kicks off and there are some good looking fights on the horizon and some up in the clouds ones as well! I thought id just look generally at the upcoming buzz fights!

Devon Alexander will be defending against Kell Brook in what will be Brooks first world title tilt at Welterweight. This should be a great match!

Alexander has obviously proved himself in his career and we know what he is capable of. He hasn’t shown any real power in his punches though for near on 3 years since stopping Urango and in his recent tussle with Lucas Matthysse he was floored as well so this may be in Brooks favor, we’ll see.

Brook has also proved himself worthy albeit on a Domestic and European Level but everyone has to take the next step sometime in their career and for Brook this is it. A performance like he had against Carson Jones will almost certainly end in defeat however something like the Ricky Hatton or Hector Saldivia performances should make for a winnable and potentially exciting fight.

It will be a great one to watch either way!

Felix Sturm will take on Sam Soliman in an IBF eliminator as his come back fight after losing his world title to Daniel Geale in September.

I cant see much going wrong for Strum here to be honest. He is fighting a past his prime Soliman and although he may not stop him it is a fight between a German former world champion and an Australian two time world title challenger (both losses) happening in Germany! Strum on a massive land slide points win regardless of what happens in the ring is my bet here.

Danny Garcia takes on a past his prime fighter in Zab Judah for the Light Welterweight world title.

Garcia seems to be going from strength to strength with every fight. For a man who was heard of but barely spoken about 18 months ago he is now considered number 1 in the LWW division. To achieve this honor Garcia has been getting in the ring with who ever he is told to and knocking them out in spectacular fashion! I am a massive fan of this guy! Unfortunately I can’t say the same of his father! He is mouthy, arrogant, cocky and gives the impression he is so desperate to have the fame his son has had to earn (that he himself never could achieve) that he is willing to say anything it takes to get it! Close your dad’s mouth Danny please, he is embarrassing you!

Zab Judah is, well Zab Judah! We all know him, we all know his prime was many years back now and we all know that the one problem Zab has in his career is that his face seems to be a magnet for the biggest punches EVER thrown!

I hear “Garcia Vs Judah” and I immediately think “Tszyu Vs Judah”! Garcia can punch just as viciously as Tszyu could but with more speed and accuracy! Good Night Sweet Prince….AKA Garcia wins by massive KO!!

Sergio Martinez will be back in action, this time defending his world title against Martin Murray in Argentina.

This is a strange one to me because…… Martinez we don’t need to discuss because we have watched him plenty of times! He is proven in a big way! He is one of the best in the world P4P and mixes with the top class fighters whenever he can.

Murray on the other hand is an unbeaten fighter currently. We could say he is untested but he went to Germany to fight Strum and came away with a well earned draw. I think the world knows that Murray would have been given the nod in this fight had it occurred outside of Germany but bygones be bygones, it’s behind us.

Murray doesn’t “look” good enough to beat Martinez but then again Bradley didn’t “look” good enough to live with Pacquiao. I am not going to kid myself and say this is a 50/50 fight because its clearly not, Murray will have to earn every point he gets and it may well not be many, we’ll have to wait and see.

There is a big difference between earning a draw against Strum in Germany and having to fight Martinez all the way over in Argentina! Try to put up a great show Martin but I hate to say I am afraid it may be time for the O to go!

There is also talk of

Trout, Alvarez, Cotto, Mayweather, Guerrero.

Froch, Kessler, Ward, Stevenson, Bute and Dirrell back on the scene.

Vitali, Fury, Price, Wilder, Haye.

Pacquiao, Marquez, Khan, Bradley.

Hopkins, Cleverly, Cloud.

Donaire, Mares, Rigondeaux.

Broner, Burns, Rees.

So in all a great looking year ahead! Let’s hope the Boxing Gods are smiling down so the blood sucking promoters and fight managers don’t ruin these amazing fights through their own personal greed and childish bickering!

Lets also hope some of the long term bias, racist writers retire or seriously change their tune when they sit down with pen to paper this year! You know who you are!

Oh and here’s a “just for fun” question to discuss……Who, if anyone, do you think will be the big comeback from retirement fighter this year?
