Rees to Broner: I’ll brush his hair after I knock him out

broner53By Scott Gilfoid: British fighter Gavin Rees (37-1, 18 KO’s) believes he’s going to be able to knock WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) out in their fight next month on February 16th and take his World Boxing Council title in front of Broner’s own American fans at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Rees said “After I knock him [Broner] out, I’ll brush his hair him if he wants.”

I don’t know how Rees is going to be able to do that when it’s going to be him that’s knocked out in this fight. Broner is going to be the one standing above Rees looking down at him with sympathy for the fallen fighter.

In fairness to Rees, I don’t think realizes yet that he was merely brought in as the token fodder opponent for Broner to destroy in front of a large American crowd at the Boardwalk Hall and a huge amount of boxing fans tuning in to watch the fight on HBO. Rees is just the guy that is being brought in to whet the appetites of both the Brits and the Americans for a potential Broner vs. Ricky Burns later on in the year if Golden Boy Promotions can somehow talk Burns into taking the fight Broner.

Rees doesn’t have a chance in this fight at all, period. Golden Boy could have selected a better opponent than Rees, but the opponent wouldn’t be British and right now they’re still hoping to match Broner with Burns this year.

Broner still isn’t ready to move up to 140 right now despite the fact that there aren’t any important fights in the lightweight division. Even the Burns fight isn’t important in the minds of casual boxing fans in the United States because they don’t know who Burns is.

I’d be really surprised if Rees can make it past the 2nd round because he’s so, so badly out of his league in this fight that it’s beyond imagination. Broner will have to be really taking it easy on Rees for this fight to go past the second.
