golovkin2By Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) plans on getting back in the ring in a couple of months after he faces Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) on January 19th this month at Madison Square Garden, in New York, according to Steve Kim. Golovkin wants to make a name for himself in a big hurry and the best way for him to do that is to fight as often as he can so he can get the big name fighters to face him.

Rosado, 26, is far from the kinds of opponents Golovkin wants to fight, but he’s still giving the guy his respect and not taking the fight for granted by not training hard. Rosado is going to get the best that Golovkin has on January 19th, and that’s probably not good news for Rosado because he’s been pretty shielded from really good opposition since he failed when he attempted to step up against better opposition in 2009 in his 2nd round knockout loss to Alfredo Angulo.

You can give Rosado a pass in that fight because he was only 23 at the time and that’s pretty young to be taking on a solid fighter like Angulo. However, Rosado looks unchanged from that time in terms of his fighting style and that’s going to be a problem for him against Golovkin because he’s way too easy to hit.

If Rosado lets Golovkin hit him as often as Angulo did, then the fight might not make it out of the 1st round. Rosado can’t allow Golovkin to be able to tee off on him the same way that Angulo was doing to him. That was too easy for Angulo and he just obliterated Rosado in that fight.

Rosado talks as if he’s in the same class as Golovkin, but when you look at how he fights and how he’s failed in the past against less than dangerous opposition, you come to the conclusion that Rosado is pretty much all talk and not much else. He’s a good contender level fighter at 154, but he’s not really championship level material.
