DeGale faces Zuniga for vacant WBC 168 lb Silver title on Saturday

By Scott Gilfoid: 26-year-old James DeGale (13-1, 9 KO’s) will be taking a break from defending his EBU super middleweight title to instead go after the vacant WBC Silver 168 pound title against former world title challenger Fulgencio Zuniga (25-6-1, 22 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Bonus Arena, Hull, Yorkshire, UK.

You would say this is an easy stay busy fight for DeGale except that I don’t think there’s any such thing for a fighter like DeGale because he gets too hit too much, he’s too slow of hand and foot, and he lacks the power to make fights easy for him. DeGale is still a decent fighter, but he’s not an ‘A’ fighter. He’s like B- guys struggling to beat C and D fighters.

Zuniga, 35, has lost two out of his last three fights against Thomas Oosthuizen and Tavoris Cloud. Zuniga loses only against the top fighter. He can beat the C and D level fighters no problem. We’re going to find out if Zuniga has enough to get past DeGale, and I kind of have my doubts that he can do this.

In his last fight, Zuniga was easily beaten in a 12 round unanimous decision loss to International Boxing Organization 168 pound champion Thomas Oosthuizen by the scores of 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109 last month. Zuniga looked horrible in that fight as he was unable to get past the long reach of the 6’4″ Oosthuizen.

DeGale will be a lot easier for Zuniga to hit than Oosthuizen was. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to be able to land enough shots to win this one, because Zuniga can be outworked. DeGale will make it tough on him by throwing a lot of slapping punches and moving a great deal. That’s going to be a big problem for Zuniga because he’s mostly just a slugger who doesn’t belong at 168 or 175. He’s more of a middleweight.
