Khan vs. Brook possible for 2013

Image: Khan vs. Brook possible for 2013By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that he’s been in discussion with the promoter for Amir Khan about a fight between him and his fighter unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (28-0, 18 KO’s) for a bout that could take place in 2013, after Brook fights Hector Saldivia and the winner of the Randall Bailey vs. Devon Alexander fight. Obviously, it would be contingent on the 26-year-old Brook having the IBF welterweight title after beating the Alexander-Bailey winner. Fat chance that happens.

Hearn said to Sky Sports News “I first spoke to Asif Vali, Amir Khan’s manager after the Garcia [Khan vs. Danny Garcia] fight, thinking about a potential Brook vs. Khan fight in the winter or early next year. Those discussions continued after their recent appearances on Ringside. I think this fight is inevitable.”

Whether this fight is inevitable or not, I don’t see it happening in 2013, and when it does it happen, I believe it’ll be between two desperate fighters with not a lot of options for their careers. Khan will no doubt beat brakes off of the tiny 5’6″ Carlos Molina that Golden Boy has dug up for him from the lightweight division to fight on December 8th, but once Khan starts fighting the better fighters at light welterweight once again, like Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse, Khan is going to start accumulating losses once again.

I have a feeling that Golden Boy will shield Khan from those guys to keep him winning. And if Golden Boy is shielding Khan them, then they’ll almost surely keep him away from Brook. However, it may not matter because Brook is on course for a loss against the winner of the Bailey vs. Alexander fight. Let’s be real, Brook isn’t going to beat either of those guys, and he can forget about them fighting him in the UK. That’s not happening, so it’s going to be tough times for Brook in 2013.

Khan won’t fight Brook once he’s knocked out by Bailey or Alexander, and if Khan fights anyone good at light welterweight, he himself is going to get knocked out. It doesn’t matter what his new trainer Virgil Hunter tried to teach Khan, he’s still get knocked out if Golden Boy puts him in with someone that actually fight at light welterweight. But like I said, I have a feeling that Khan will be very, very carefully matched in 2013 and likely 2014 as well, avoiding names like Lucas Matthysse, Garcia, Mike Alvarado, and Brandon Rios.

The guys that we’ll likely see Khan fighting next year are Zab Judah, Lamont Peterson, Erik Morales, Humberto Soto and Jessie Vargas. That’s all I can see Khan matched with next year unless Golden Boy keeps digging up lightweights for Khan to fight with flashy records but little size and ZERO power. Golden Boy will likely try and build Khan up by matching him lightly fight after fight with all of his bouts being televised with all likelihood on Sky Sports and Showtime. The casual boxing fans probably won’t know any better that Khan isn’t fighting the toughest guys at light welterweight and will be impressed with his speed and movement. Khan could become a star without even having to fight anyone. As for Brook, forget it. Hearn isn’t going to get that fight with Khan, so he should just forget about it.
